Churches Weigh People Down

I consider the following scripture to be a definitive description of works and most churches. Matthew 23:4 "For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers." Do you agree?

what about people who are exhausted, worn out & burnt out? how did the people get to that point of EXHAUSTION. this is where most christians do not understand what they are doing. their conclusion is they being judged. christ was angry at the pharisees bec. of their attitude of arrogance & self righteousness. that is what christians miss the point!

I have not found love in the church proper, but I have found it on the streets- that is, Wounded Warriors who have no place to rest their heads. No church home. But as dedicated and faithful as they come. To me this is the true Body. And it speaks volumes regarding the state of the "Church"

As mentioned previously, this was a very specific reference to the Jewish leaders who did impose many man-made traditions that benefitted themselves or their own whims. Some even went around measuring how far someone walked during the Sabbath in order to penalize them if they stepped too far.

Jesus condemned a particular man-made tradition in Matthew 15:3-9. They were getting rich by others not wanting to care for their own parents.

P2: This is something that can be done even today, but be very careful. Some would have you believe that the church should not require you to do what the Bible tells you to - deceiving some into believing that doing anything at all consistutes a "work" and that all "works" of any kind should be avoided. That should only fool those who are ignorant of the scriptures.

P3: Those who have read all of the New Testament know that much is expected of them. Not because they need to jump through legal hoops to be saved, that is not the case, but because true Christians are those who DO the will of the Father, not just say "Lord, Lord".

part 1
john - I disagree with you bec. there are 4 kinds of people in the church
1. the pharisees-arrogant religious people
2. experts in the law-
3.people who would look for something to accuse - like Job's neighbors - everything is a sin
4 hypocrites - same people who would judge yet do not practice what they condemn others for.

Part 2
remember christ warned about the yeast of the pharisees that spread into the minds of the congr. that put others into bondage, weight on their shoulders, shut the blessings of heaven.
that is why they speak like pat robertson & falwell.

Yes Tom I AGREE, false love, or no love, that has been my experience, the years before, I was noticing jealousy, envy, and gossip. And pastors un-unified with surrounding pastors in area, always in disagreement and disliking each other. I always think its a JOKE when Pastors treat their congregation like puppets, They say turn to the person next to you, and SAY THIS, DO THAT, SIMON SAYS. YUCK I HATE IT!!!!!

mima, in my opinion its people that weigh people down.the worldy attitudes about just any topic you can think, cars, homes, credit cards, gossip, personally in the mearly 30 odd years I have been a christian, I see very little love within the church today.

Yes, I find this scripture very applicable to many churches unfortunately.

when christ was healing the blind on the sabbath, Pharisees would look for something to accuse him. They also believe that the reason why a person is blind is bec. of SIN! just like today's pastors, they are Hypocritical self righteous religious experts in the law! they themselves do not practice that they accuse others of! That's why people miss blessing bec. of the yeast of the pharisees (pastors) not bec people lack faith!

Although some churches do this kind of thing, that particular Scripture is speaking directly to the Scribes and pharisees, not the church.

Jesus was speaking of the Jewish Oral Law, which was eventually published as the Mishna, which expanded on what Moses wrote down in the Torah. Apparently Jesus did not accept as binding most of what one finds in the Mishna.

It really depends on the church on how much stress they put on works. Some believe you must work get salavation and to maintain your salvation. Other churches preach you have to do nothing, and are predestinen to be a Christian regardless of what you do. In the churches I've attended over the years preach, you don't work for your salvation, BUT BECAUSE of your salvation. (You can work if you want to, but it's not required.)

I can agree with this, some churches today do put heavy burdens on people. They have rules that they go by, but yet they don't follow them so yes it is happening and the scriptures are true, if it is definitive to you or not it is the truth and maybe ur part of that church.
