Evidence Of Holy Spirit

Is speaking in tongues the initial physical evidence that a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit? If so, can it be concluded believers who don't speak in tongues evidently aren't filled with the Holy Spirit?

This question is already answered in the scriptures, if you are willing to accept it. Galatians 5: 22-23: "But the fruit of the Sjpirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: anainst such there is not law." Sorry, tongues is not mentioned.
---Harold on 2/5/11

No. Conviction of sin and repentance therefrom is the initial and only true evidence of the Holy Spirit. Anyone can babble like an idiot without the Holy Spirit being present.
---jerry6593 on 2/4/11

Comfort as in spiritual rest is evidence of the Holy Spirit because Jesus promised a "comforter" who would witness to Jesus NOT himself.
Be very wary of congregations that use "come Holy Spirit". Its not about the Holy Spirit but the Son at the right hand of the father.
---larry on 12/1/10

This scripture inst in reference to the Holy Ghost, it is talking about the spirit of God which rested upon men in the old testament for the Holy Ghost had not came yet in the 16th chapter of Mark.I know this is common teaching but it is not so, and I am Pentecostal so I do believe in the power of the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues as a gift, just not as an evidence. God Bless, Paul

Gal 5:2222But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Mark 16:16-17

17And these signs shall follow them that believe, In my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues,

18They shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them, they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
---Charlene_Rivera-Ruth on 11/30/10

The people who say a person must speak in tongues to show evidence they are filled with the Holy Spirit, are the very people who have done what what is written in Romans 1:25.
---Rob on 11/29/10

Back to the evidentiary aspect of tongues I hear a misquote often in churches that says, and I quote Baptized in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues and that is no where in the scripture nor anything that remotely resembles this theory. The Holy Ghost is given as a comforter and a teacher of truth John 14:26, a sanctifier Rom 15:16, also as an equipper of our spiritual gift Lu 1:67 also 2 Tim 1:14. You see speaking in tongue is a spiritual gift 1 Cor 12: 27-31 not evidence of your spirituality.
---paul on 11/28/10

speaking in tongues is the evidence of the holy ghost, but not everybody that has the holy ghost speaks in tongues, there is other spiritual gifts that the holy ghost gives too.look in 1corinthians 12 4-11

#2 As a follow-up, has anyone with their gift of tongues declared the glories of God to the Chinese, Nepalese, Tibetans, or anyone else whose language you do not speak naturally? If no, why not?
---ShaunT on 11/15/07
tongues is not for man to understand - it is speaking mysteries to God...why does God want us to speak to him without our understanding?
Probably bc it is one of the few times we're in full agreement with Him

when our amen really reached His amen

lionel- i think your talking about Johns disciples in acts 19? acts 8 is the revival in Samaria preached by Philip. he preached Christ, they believed and were baptized v12 and there was great joy v8 yet there was no filling of the HS v16. Believing the gospel is not a sign, joy is not evidence, its not automatic at baptism, it didn't come with repentance. so if that's all out the window how do you know when someone gets it? how did they know the Samaritans didnt have it? because there was no tongues.
---Kraus on 11/20/07

The scripture you quoted{acts 8:14-17}indecate those people were baptised by John the Baptist, unto repentance.

At that time the plane of salvation was not complete,Jesus was still on earth.

Those that John baptize did not receive the holy spirit nor were they born again.
It was not untill Jesus death burial resuraction, that the plane of salvation was complete.
That is the season this took place as it did
---LIONEL on 11/20/07

The bible says to try the spirits to see if they be of God or not. I recommend this to anyone who is unsure if a person is doing things in self or doing things in the spirit. The Holy Ghost does not lie. He will let you know who is real and who isn't.
---Rebecca_D on 11/17/07

shaunT a friend of mine went on a mission trip to Africa and when there was a service with children being filled with the spirit she heard one child speak in english, he was saying "i love you Jesus" as well as other praises (he did not know english). what sounds like bable could be another language.
---Kraus on 11/16/07

Lionel i have to ask you about Acts 8:14-17 they received the word, where baptized in Jesus name but none of them had the HS. to be baptized they had to repent and believe didn't they? how did the apostles know they didn't have the HS? it wasn't lack of fruit or obedience to the gospel.
---Kraus on 11/16/07

1)The basis for this teaching is thru "historical normative" interpation in the book of Acts. that means you look at how the Holy Spirit was received in the early Church. acts 2 All 120 in the upper room including Mary and Jesus' brothers spoke in tongues. acts 10:46 all of Cornelius house. the scripture said they knew the Holy Spirit fell when they spoke in tongues. acts 19:16 all the disciples of John rebaptized in Jesus name spoke in tongues.
---Kraus on 11/16/07

2) if the diverse gift thing applies then ALL would not have spoken in tongues. Now the "gift of tongues" and "tongues as a prayer language" are two different things. every believer needs tongues as a prayer language so the HS can intercede for them. just as infilling this is between you and God and needs no interpation.

... and I'll sing with you, Andrea:

---Caring on 11/16/07

Caring thank you.
Jesus was probably pretty fanatical.
I'm fanatical but my neighbors only know that I'm a christian.
We would probably worship and pray together, no one but God would know what was in our hearts. (except listen closely I'll be singing in tongues)

You sound like it is him you want to please and that is a very good place to be.

I disagree with your churches teachings - you may disagree with mine,as long as we're trusting Christ as our Savior we're on the same path.
---Andrea on 11/16/07

Andrea, it is the Grace in me that pushes me to observe the Commandments. Do we have to spell every comma and full stop whenever we state something?
---Caring on 11/16/07

My brothers and sisters in Christ, lets grow up and stop eating that baby food of tongues, looseing salvation, trusting feelings.

The word is very clear if you listen to what it{word}says.

Every sinner that repent trust, believe, the plane of salvation Jesus saves and gives him the HOLY SPIRIT INSTANCELY.

#1 "Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language...[where they heard] them speak in [their] tongues the wonderful works of God" (Act 2:6,11)

I believe in Scriptural tongues not the Azuza street babel and gibberish that is found today where even in some churches they have tongues classes! Oh my. So, when ya'll refer to tongues, are you referring to real languages as spoken in Acts or not?
---ShaunT on 11/15/07

Andrea, I'm receiving your message with open mind and heart and in some areas I'm agreeing with you.

I'm more in practicality than in attempting to influence people with nice talk like some care to do. I look up to Christ for help and try to follow His teachings but I am horrified of fanaticism aand many here are possessed byit.

If following the 10 Commandments is what you wish to be judged on then so be it done to you.
I need to rely on His grace
Pray for me.

Gal 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law, ye are fallen from grace.

The Fruit of the Spirit is as described in Galatians 5:22-23 are evidence of the Holy Spirit. One will speak in tongues at one time or another, but may not be in a public place, during church or where anyone else may hear it and it may not happen more than once.

Caring, please receive this in the way it is meant
any person that sins is not worthy of Jesus.
You, I, anyone. We can not be good enough.

all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Rom 3:23

We are not saved bc of our denomination but bc of Christ's sacrifice. It is in accepting the sacrifice that we are saved. Not by goods works.
A follower of Christ will produce goods works but they will not save them
be blessed.
---Andrea on 11/15/07

Andrea, I concentrate on loving God and my neighbor, observe His Commandments, try to help those in need and keep my sanity by not wasting my time wondering what certain passages in the Bible mean.

I'm more into reading and studying the New Testament, and although I've read the OT, I won't try to understand all the complicated issues narrated in it - I see not need for that.

To me, living a clean life, exercise the virtue of Love is the main base of being a true Christian.

Andrea, first of all, I don't drink any wine, beer, whisky or whatever. I only drink juice and coke.

I attended a Catholic charismatic group but prefer the old fashion RCC prayers etc.

Caring: Speaking in Tongues is for today. Yet what they utter must be tested against scripture to know whether it is of God or a false "fire (spirit) being called down from heaven in the sight of men"
---TS on 11/15/07

Rom 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God [are] without repentance.

If God gives a person gifts He does not take them back. Which may account for why some seemingly walk in His gifts and yet walk with the world.
The evidence of the infilling of the Holy Spirit is the willingness and the ability to evangelize.
Speaking in tongues was always present at the infilling of the HS but it is not written that it will always happen that way

remember the infilling is seperate then salvation
---Andrea on 11/15/07

caring - when your discussing speaking in tongues, you may not think it is for today - you'll have to find me a verse to back that up especially since I pray in tongues.
It is a gift spoken of in Acts & ICor12-14

Then I'd ask you to consider if your speaking in tongues when you've had to much to drink that you think about that for awhile.
1) why are you drinking to much
2) maybe the source of YOUR tongues is not the Holy Spirit

Caring I apologize - that was not nice.
I have a glass of wine or a beer occasionally too.
When speaking about the gifts of the Spirit there is diversity in beliefs. The RCC has a charismatic movement in it and I would encourage you to seek that out.
---Andrea on 11/15/07

No to both questions. "A new 'heart' (focus) will I give you, and a new 'spirit' (attitude) will I put within you: I will put My 'Spirit' (inspirational guidance and power) within you, and 'cause' (enable) you to keep my statutes, you 'shall' [be empowered to] keep My judgments, and do them. Behold My servant, Mine elect, in whom My soul delights, he shall bring forth 'judgment' (discretion) to the gentiles"-as those without true knowledge of God's covenant. This is the evidence of His presence.

When you receive the Holy Ghost the tongues come with it sometime you repent but you don't speak in tongues right then but if you keep on praying you will receive the tongues because that means you have received his spitit

Andrea, no Pope has ever supported the Nazi. The others committed a sin and confessed it - this pastor I mentioned "prays in tongues", cheats from the church and still "speaks in tongues".

The evidence of the Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit, you either have him or you don't he bears witness with our spirit.
Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

The best evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit, your spirit will reject false doctrines. The higher road of Truth will be taken over the false. Your spirit will discern lies, fabrications and falsehoods.
---Bob on 11/13/07

caring - I know a pope that belonged to the Nazi party - I know a sainy that committed adultery - Moses killed a man.....God puts up with a lot....let him determine who is filled.

besides He gives gifts - it is up to us to use those gifts and continue to walk in Him. I do not believe He takes His gifts back although you may not be able to use them correctly.
---Andrea on 11/13/07

I knew a pastor who "prays in tongues" at church. At home him and his wife fight like dogs and cats and he also stole some money from his church for hsi own peronal use.

Am I supposed to believe the he is filled with the H.S. or that his "praying in tongues" is fake?

Blessings leon, I ask God every morning to fill me with the Holy Spirit, but I have never spoken in tongues. To answer your question, just because a believer does not speak in tongues, does not mean that he is not filled with the Holy Spirit. God Bless!
---Cynthia on 11/12/07

Speaking in tongues signifies you have developed proficiency the least useful of all the spiritual gifts and nothing more. It is one the same level as being able to touch the tip of you nose with your tongue. If you want to be effective for Christ strive for Wisdom.
---Phil_the_Elder on 11/12/07

When a person is saved, they receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. When they are baptized with the Holy spirit, which is evidence with speaking in tongues, they become filled with the Holy Spirt.
---dan on 11/12/07

Speaking in tongues is evidence of baptism of the Holy Ghost. But if a person doesn't speak in tongues that doesn't mean they aren't filled with the Holy Ghost. When a person becomes saved, they are filled with the Holy Ghost. Alot of people are not baptized by the Holy Ghost and with fire (tongues) until later on in their walk with God. Anyone who believes or teaches that if a person doesn't speak in tongues are not filled with the Holy Ghost, are believing a lie.

This may appear a little abstract to you at first but please bear with me, I have never heard it said like this from any one except for myself, so you can make what you want out of it, but my own personal philosophy is this: The Hovering Elohim, The Person of the Holy Spirit lives with inside of me, Many are demonically posessed, Yet I pray that I am POSESSED ENTIRELY by the Holy Spirit, I am absolutely certain that HIS PERSONAL language is not English, I just vocalized HIS languages, through my mouth.

I'm beginning to believe that the gift of tongues is given to intercessors. Evidence that a beliver is filled with the Holy Spirit is many. You will be convicted of what is sin. Jesus said He will lead you and guide you into all truth. You will have the fruit of the Holy Spirit evident in your life, "Love, peace, Joy, etc., You won't go to movies like Divinci Code (false doctrine movies). You will recognize sin and repent of it quickly.
---Donna on 11/12/07

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is spiritual not physical.

Tongues do not come out of your 'head knowledge', they come from the Holy Spirit.
They come from the Holy Spirit to your spirit and they flow out of your spirit.

I wouldn't draw that conclusion. Many who don't speak in tongues don't do it because they don't want to or are ignorant but yet are filled with the Spirit. I think we have better things to wonder about.

I think Paul says that speaking in tongues is one of the lesser Gifts?
Aren't different gifts given to different people?

If you try to counterfeit them, you will be quickly exposed.
The gift of discerning of spirits exposes lies, the presence of angels, demons and counterfeit gifts - those that are out of natural perceptions - humans trying to work them up and those that the devil tries to deceive others with.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit.
There are people who will never speak in tongues although they have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
To force someone to repeat after me, "Shondo", is where you will see words being repeated from a natural perception.

Anyone who has received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit knows that speaking in tongues does not give you salvation.
Let's all agree on that one for the 100th time right now.

False churches mandate that the 'evidence of speaking in tongues' means you're saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. So alot of people work it up in the flesh, you find fleshy false moves of God and words simply being repeated to satisfy human minds.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit. Someone may not speak in tongues for months afterwards.
All of the gifts are as God wills. He decides what you will have and you can't imitate or counterfeit them.
