People go see these movies, or read the books, and defend them because of ignorance. They are blinded by Satan that these things glorify him, NOT God. They are also blinded by Satan to the fact that they can open the door wide open to demons possessing them with these things. This is why it is so important to speak the TRUTH, so people's eyes will be open to see Satan's LIES. Also we MUST pray that their eyes would be opened.

Deut 18:9-12 When you enter the land which the LORD God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes their son or daughter pass the fire, who uses divination, who practices witchcraft, or who interprets omens, or sorcerer, or who casts a spell, or medium, or spiritist, or who calls up the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD.." Rev 18:23 "and the light of a lamp will not shine in you any longer, and the voice of the bridegroom and bride will not be heard in you any longer, for your merchants were the great men of the earth, because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery"

Uhm, maybe because the Harry Potter novels are classic good-vs-evil literature?

As for the magic in Harry Potter, it's BIOLOGICAL. In fact, the entire series is about the reaction people have to wizards based upon how much of them is biologically magical.

The entire series is essentially an essay on race and the evils of bigotry. Magic is the means by which this point is made. (It'd be a bit blunt if Hogwarts were a school for *insert choice of race here*, after all.)

Lee, Of course J.K. Rowlings would say that. Satan has her in his clutches, and she doesn't even have to be aware of it. She is NOT a follower of GOD (YAHUVEH), therefore she is of the "world" and belongs to Satan. She's making her Dough off of these books, and she doesn't care about "demonic influences" on children. But, J.K. Rowlings WILL PAY IN HELL if she does not repent of leading these little ones astray!

The pastor at church warned parents not to let their kids see The Golden Compass because the movie is from a series of books in which the author has kids on a mission to kill God.
As far as letting kids see movies like this, just make sure you tell them what YOU think first.
---sue on 12/10/07

Lee if you honestly believe this, then I have some land on the moon I'd love to sell you at a fair price.
---Whisper on 12/9/07

Rowlings is a liar...see articles about library's who are renting out books on the occult and witchcraft and how it has increased tremendously since Harry Potter got a hold of the kids.
See the website that teaches kids spells and incantations thanks to Harry Pooot..and see how many kid signed for Hogwarts school of witchcraft.

*Has anyone confirmed to you that this is the motive? (drawing children into the occult by having them read Harry Potter books).*

In an interview with JK Rowlings, the question was asked if her books promoted the occult for children. Her reply was that they have not find a single person that has joined the occult as a result of reading her books.
---Lee on 12/7/07

Trev "This is to draw children into the Occult and lull them into thinking their is nothing wrong with majic, scorcery, etc"
Has anyone confirmed to you that this is the motive?
---alan_of_UK on 12/6/07

The Harry Potter books should only be read by mature Christians, not those that believe there is a plotting devil behind every page in a book.
---lee on 12/6/07

Strong Axe. I totaly forgot that one. We must pray for him, as he is only human. And none of us are perfect.
---Whisper on 12/5/07

It grieves me to hear my Christian friends talk about how wonderful Harry Potter books are. When I question them about it they try and justify their actions.

Harry Potter books keeping getting darker and darker and the majic more powerful. This is to draw children into the Occult and lull them into thinking their is nothing wrong with majic, scorcery, etc.

Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, ...
Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, ...

Sad isn't it.

I would like to know of the shows each of you watch in here?Books you read orthings you participate in.To many like to strain a gnat and swallow a camel. It's kinda like someone condemning smoking that's overweight. Ryan Z,I like your answer.I do not watch these shows, but as I said previously,I growed up watching shows with violence and am not a violent person.Once again, maybe I am the Mynority???

Mel Gibson lost a lot of credibility when he made some very anti-semitic remarks to a police officer who pulled him over - not a very "Christian" thing to do.
---StrongAxe on 12/4/07

Frankly, if a person is completely sold out to Jesus, they won't have time to watch such silly movies where witchcraft is glorified. They will be reading their Bibles, talking to someone about the Lord, or praying. A parent who has seen all these Harry Potter movies would be a real concern. What kind of example are they showing to their children? Is it important to Jesus what our children learn? Absolutely!

the golden compass is written by pullman who delcares he wants to extinguish God in our society. He hates God.
Potter is using spells and the devils ways to try and do good..which is ridiculous..
Evil can't be good..It can only fool you.
Most of you Christians have been fooled to buy into this evil...May God forgive you!

If Harry Potter is bad because it has elements of magic in the story line then here is a list of other pieces of fiction that Christians should not view on the same basis:
Chronicles of Narnia
Star Wars
Wizard of Oz
Care Bears
Snow White
Sleeping Beauty
Lord of the Rings

We need some movie producers to produce MEGA HUGE"" motion pictures WRITTEN BY THE HOLY SPIRIT"" AS WAS THE DAYS THE BIBLE WAS WRITTEN, for every sinful one that has ever been produced, I have no idea what happened to Mel Gibson? He produced The Passion movie that was INCREDIBLE, now I don't even hear of him anymore. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, I am getting my boy, interested in film production, he is a talent, and I PRAY THE CHILDREN of this generation will take back the airwaves for our GOD.
---Whisper on 12/4/07

Yes, and back in the days of the Roman Empire, throwing Christians to the lions to be shredded alive at a stadium was entertainment for people of that time. I mean, there has to be boundries on what Christians allow as entertainment. As a True Saint, whatever you watch, the Holy Spirit (SHKHINYAH) is watching also.
---Gordon on 12/4/07

Amen Cynthia! We need some King Pin CHRISTIAN MOVIE PRODUCERS, that realize for every one of the devils schemes and attacks through the EYEGATES OF OUR SOULS, influencing GODS PEOPLE who watch them taking them down (MISSION ACCOMPLISHED FOR THE DEVIL) We are not to be ignorant of the meathods and devices the enemy uses. I don't know of many things in this world that are more influential then the POWER OF THE AIRWAVES. It is time that Gods people WAKE UP!

Unfortunately..they do..Why? cause they are shallow and fooled. Brainwashed and should do more research on what the Bible says about spells, the occult, incantations, witchcraft etc...
Harry Potter is based on evil pretending to be good. It just doesn't work that way!
---lisa on 12/4/07

Because such people let things get to them and let such things trouble their walk with God. I for one have seen all of the Harry Potter movies and I like them. I have not yet seen the Golden Compass, but as far as I can tell it is nothing more than one have an vivid imagination. If people lets movies and such things interfere with their walk with God, then their walk wasn't very strong to begin with.

I grew up watching Westerns and it didn't make me want to go out and shoot up the neighborhood.I watched Bewitched and it didn't make me want to cast spells on anyone.I watched Karate movies and it didn't make me want to go out and beat anyone up.I was raised in a Christian home.My Dad was a Pastor and a good man of God.God has called me to preach and have been since 1989.Maybe I am the Mynority????

**Because their form of Christianity, is neither hot nor cold but ''LUKEWARM''**

I hold to the teachings of Christianity and her basic dogmas with a firmness that would make most of the others here look like Unitarians, and I see nothing wrong with HP.

Have you read the books or seen the movies, Whisper?
---Jack on 12/3/07

Because they are entertainment.
---Ryan_Z on 12/3/07

I know that some Christians see nothing wrong with movies such as this. Some say it is just a movie, But personally, I believe that as a child of God, we have to be careful what we watch, especially movies that portray witchcraft, magic, etc. I have never seen the Harry potter movies, nor read the books, and the Golden Compass movie, I have yet to hear about. The devil will use any means to get into the mind of a Christian, and these type movies are something that a Christian should avoid.
---Cynthia on 12/3/07

Christians that defend movies such as Harry Potter and the Golden Compass are not Scripturally discerned. They mostly believe that since they're "only fictional stories and movies" and that it's all "make believe and acting" that there is no real harm being done. But, the point of it all is what the stories represent. The subject matter that is being presented, Witchcraft and Atheism, should never be subjects of "fun and harmless entertainment for the True Followers of GOD.

As long as people can differentiate the difference between reality and fantasy Harry Potter movies are a benign threat to Christianity.

I have not seen the "Golden Compass" so I won't comment on it.
---notlaw99 on 12/3/07

Because they haven't read their Bible through. There are many scriptures referring to witchcraft. Jesus said that if we aren't for HIM, we are against HIM.

---Whisper on 12/2/07

John, your question would make just as much sense as the converse: "Why do some Christians NOT defend such movies as..."

I think it's silly to determine motives for tastes in popular literature.

I think that many Christians are confused about what they should watch/read/do. They are also afraid of what others might think of them if they do something that another Christian would not do. The choice is ours really but a basic 'rule of thumb' is WHEN IN DOUBT - DON'T. We can do later what we havn't done but we can't undo what we have done. From the small clips on T.V. of H.P. movies I would avoid them. I know nothing about the Golden Compass yet so cannot comment on this.
---RitaH on 12/2/07

# 1 I ahve seen the HP films, and so have many of my Christian friends and not one of us has found our Faith threatened or even challenged.
Nor have any of my non-Christian friends thought there is any reality in the story line or in the and spells etc.
---alan_of_UK on 12/2/07

# 2 I believe the Pullman books are a bit different since he is an avowed atheist, and the books are deliberately anti-Christian, In which case they might influence in the wrong direction those who do not have a strong Faith.
But strong Christians should perhaps see the film, on the basis that we should "know the enemy" and be able to put our Faith fowrard to others who have seen the films
