I believe that is one of the reasons for the gift of speaking in other tongues,is that it bypasses the mind, going thru the spirit, from spirit to spirit. The bible says that we know not what we ought to pray for, at times, but, the spirit always knows. I do not believe that Satan has the power to interput the tongues. That is part of the benefit. Not only does our spirit stand in the gap for us, it can't be intercepted.

There is a similarity between 'tongues' of the charismatic renewal, and Enochian or the angel language of John Dee who was a courtier in the time of Q Elizabeth 1. Of course Satan is a fallen angel.
---frances on 1/18/08

Tongues was used in the Bible to mean that people spoke so that they could understand one another. If you open yourself up to a spirit and do not know what it is saying in you, you are opening yourself up to demons. When Nimrod rebelled tongues were a punishment from God, to put an end to the political unification of the world.

If someone is speaking in tongues & their is no enterpitor: RUN, BECAUSE God isn't a God of Confussion, And Just like Paul said, If a piper plays an unknown song How shall the people dance to it. Also That he would rather speak a few words of Prophecy than a 1000 words that No body can understand.
The whole 14th Ch. of 1st Corinthians explains EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TONGUES.

Nancy wrote,"True speaking in tongues should NEVER require a translator." Yet the Bible says," I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he INTERPERT, that the church may receive edifying" in first Corinthians 5:14. There seems to be a little discrepancy here.

While there might be a correlation between pentecostal experiences and biochemical changes, that doesn't prove which causes which. It's quite reasonable to expect that genuine religious experiences will cause euphoric states that will alter blood chemistry.

Capcaisin is the active ingredient in hot peppers. Like anything that causes pain, one would expect it to stimulate production of endorphins.

The Word of God does not clearly define whether or not Lucifer understands what is being said during the manifestation of speaking in tongues. With that being said the Word does state that you speak directly to God when manifesting holy spirit (pneuma hagion). I think another aspect that needs to be considered is whether or not you are speaking in tongues out loud or are you speaking in tongues silently (what, oh yes that can be done also).
---Michael on 12/23/07

my reply cont...considering the fact that Lucifer is the god of this world you would have to assume that anything spoken out loud would be known to him. So you don't really know but what you do know is that all the power of the Godhead bodily dwells in the beliver. So which do you think is more powerful Lucifer or the God in Christ in you? So who cares if Lucifer understands or not the manifestation is more powerful than him.

1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

Paul said your science was vain babblings, Mikem, Let's see I give you the word of God that I live by, you give me mens knowledge and science, and you say I am of the devil because I speak in tongues. Paul says those of the spirit of the world belong to the devil and so did Jesus.
---exzucuh on 12/21/07

What I've never understood is why what is essentially babbling could be considered speaking in tongues.

True speaking in tongues is speaking one's native language, while people who do not know that language are gifted with the understanding of it.

Like giving a sermon in English, and having someone who only speaks Japanese hear it in Japanese.

True speaking in tongues should NEVER require a translator.
---Nancy on 12/21/07

I do not know what an ad hominum is nor do I care. I think I may have had it for breakfast once. Mike is a wolf among the flock his ramblings believers should ignore like the useless science he loves. All education beyond what is needed for a job is a snare of Satan. These papered science professors will not get you into heaven. The wisdom of this world is foolishness.

The study of pnetacostal experience includes "responses to rhythms" ( Yale 1999,), and "Temporal lobe discharges during Glosserlia" (UCLA 2001, esearch dept.)

My major was Biology, but I did some study in religious phenonology.

Pentecostals speaking in tongues (glossolalia)are extensivly studied in psychologist, sociologist and researce scientist. Besides endorphine realease, susceptibility to influence from leaders, "psychic contagion," and conformity. Dr. Jay Wikstrom 1997, Van Der Lans 1999, Cal State., psychophysiological process as endorphin responses (Princeton U,1992)

True mormons find Scripture interpretation and Christian dialogue an affront to their deeply felt doctrines and false gospels, as do the JW's and SDA's.

---lovable_linda on 12/21/07

Andrea and Linda-That is a typical fallacy used by fundamentalist, a common tactic- AD HOMINUM. Such a fallacy us used when one MUST avoid, deflect from the issue itself, attack the person when one does not have a leg to stand on on the issue. My point still stands. "What pentacostals experience is biochemical in nature, this is backed up by a massive amount of evidence." My history, ethnic background, hair color, etc are irrelevant to the issue, period.
---MikeM on 12/21/07

There are endorphin-releasing substance called capsaicin, as well as other internal substances released during pentecostal episodes. In Native American rituals thisis seen, in shaminastic rituals where they frantically dance. They can range from a feeling of well being, 'runners high' to trace-like states, seen in extreme-pentacotals. I can list study after study on this.

Excuzah-It can clearly be proved where the pentacostal experience comes from. I reference the 'International Journal for the Psychology of Religion'
2000, Vol. 10, No. 4, Pages 221-240,

"The experience is exclusively bio-chemical, is measurable through blood test, phenomenological analysis of the pentacostal experience renders it a vicarous phenomenonetothe reciever"

Yes, it is very well studied and understood.

I've never heard anyone break out in tongues while in a bar or even these satanists bands but I'm sure they will start.

I am also just as sure that a follower of Jesus Christ knows if they are speaking to God or the devil and it riles me that people can be so blind to those that genuinely love the Lord.
We are saved by the blood and our testimony, well this is my testimony to say it is a lie can only come from the devil.

I pray in tongues and worship my Christ Jesus in tongues.
---Andrea on 12/21/07

I have heard people over the years make assertions like "The devil can't hear your thoughs" or "The devil can't interpret your tongues", but the Bible doesn't address such issues - it is silent with respect to most thing the Devil can or cannot do.
---StrongAxe on 12/21/07

Well Mike we know we can trust your opinion on Christian matters.
Aren't you the one stuck in unforgiveness for your pentecostal family?
Aren't you the mormon boy?
Aren't you the pro -evolution anti-creationist mike we've all grown to know and love

There are many forms of tounges. The most common in the world todayis of the devil. but the devil is not the only one who causes someone to speak in tongues. God's holy angels also speak in tongues. Before you condemn something you need to do a serious study of it> That goes with anything, you can't just go on what someone tells you. study to show thyself approved.
---jody on 12/20/07

Mikem your such an intelligent gainsayer. If you can measure something physically happening in a person and prove it, you have only proved it exists, you have not proven where it comes from. You cannot prove you are saved and you cannot prove your theory on tongues, But the bible very plainly explains tongues and Paul says forbid not to speak with tongues and you are doing that, you are contrary to a direct commandment from an apostle and that makes you in disobedience.

What do hormones have to do with speaking in tongues? At the age of 21, after praying for the baptism in the Holy Spirit, I received the baptism and spoke in tongues. I speak in tongues daily, as part of my daily Christian life. No hormone change occured that caused that. You are mistaken, my friend. It is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, just like healing and prophesy.
---John on 12/20/07

I was thinking about you, MikeM., I'm sooo sorry that you're still carrying enough spiritual baggage that would fill up a convoy of semi trucks.
That must be one heavy, heavy load.

This is all bio-chemical, the release of hormones-endorphines in the bloodstream. It can be measured in Hindus, native Americans, shuintus, or pentacostals who experience it.
---MikeM on 12/20/07

I pray in tongues are you saying that I am of the devil, they said Jesus was of the devil and he said they were guilty of blasphemy for calling the Holy Spirit by which he operated the Devil. I can tell you this I am not of the devil
I cast out devils by the name of Jesus and confess Jesus came in the flesh, and I speak in tongues by the gift of the Holy Ghost.
---exzucuh on 12/20/07

Some call tongues a heavenly language, and where did the devil come from?Heaven! Therefore,if tongues is a heavenly language, the devil knows it.The word"tongues"in the Bible is from a word that means language. Those that heard the "tongues" at pentacost heard languages that they understood.

Think hard and long before you attribute what the Holy Spirit does to Satan.

I speak in tongues everyday. I am a spirit filled believer in Jesus Christ every day
---Andrea on 12/20/07

If the devil can interpret your tongues, then you are speaking in a counterfeit tongue.
The devil cannot interpret the gift of tongues, which is a Holy Spirit gift.

There is a difference in "speaking in tongues" in which the Spirit makes intercession and "prophesying in tongues" which takes an interpreter.
Most is no longer taught right and the devil's counterfeit has lead to a lot of mockery and unbelief that it still exists.
Many who speak in tongues forget the spirit of the prophets are subject to the prophets and speak what they want rather than what the Lord gives the Spirit to reveal to his saints.

Not at all. Only the spirit of God can interpret tounges.

When a person is praying in tongues, they themselves probably don't even know what they are saying.
