Christian Friend Is Oppressed

How would you know if a Christian friend was oppressed (not possessed) by the devil? How would this manifest itself? What should one look out for and is there anything, besides prayer, that can help?

Sometimes the attacks are physical, sometimes psychological, sometimes emotional. As for combatting the issue, prayer is the best way to go. Talk to your pastor about maybe helping, too. Psalm 91 works a lot with this sort of thing, as well.

Demon oppression / influence involves a demon or demons attacking a person spiritually and/or encouraging him/her into sinful behavior (1 Peter 5:8-9, James 4:7). You will notice that in all the New Testament passages dealing with spiritual warfare, we are never told to cast a demon out of a believer (Ephesians 6:10-18). We are told to resist the devil (1 Peter 5:8-9, James 4:7), not to cast him out.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, because thou hast rejected knowledge.
Deliverance ministry. Not all should be administering a deliverance for varying reasons.
---Michelle on 2/9/08

1.A Charasmatic group physically restrained a person manifesting demonic behavior, later the person died. The group got into trouble.
2. A Pastor prayed for a friend from another church and they attacked him and tore up His house. His wife said no more prayer in the house and now that the devil is out of the person, they will pay for damage because they let the devil in them.

Christians should Be safe and wise about Deleiverance. Let the professionals handle it and know your limitations.

Prayer for wisdom, gift of word of knowledge and studying to show yourself approved unto God is the key. Does the person love their condition? This will cause a block to any verbal help. Prayer and getting a person to read the word themselves in a face to face to Bible study can sometimes help them acknowledege the issue. Other than that, generational diseases can also manifest negative spiritual/brain function as well as physical issues like diabetes, heart problems, depession-bipolar etc.

Oppressed or backslidden . . . oppression, to me, means a person is forced against his will, but backslidden would be more like he is choosing what he does, and so he is justifying it (verifying he wants to, and is not being forced), and doing things of sin that give him pleasures he desires. But in oppression, it would be more like he's not going after the pleasures his selfish personality would seek, but is being forced outside his sin comfort zone, and may say he can't help it.

Bill, what you say about presbyterians is true of many I know, especially where predestination is concerned. It is not true of some individuals though and that includes the person to whom I refer. My personal belief is that in most denominations we will find a handful of saved people with the majority calling themselves Christians even though they are not. The point of my original question was to clarify if he is being oppressed or is he (to be blunt) backslidden?

In all liklyhood, if she is a strong Christian, you won't know. But she will know. Prayer ofcourse, also preaching outloud works wonders. I sometimes may quote a scripture outloud. God often tells me against popular opinion "to ingnore him" [the devil]. And in whatever God tells you, it WORKS.

Some are now coming out from among the re-emergent seeker friendly type churches, and are quite oppressed. Doors were opened to them from all false traditions and beliefs that attacked their minds.
The interesting thing, they no longer call themselves Christians but Emergents.
Bottomline, it is a cult. A re-emergent cult. Some are being deprogrammed and coming back to their First Love, Jesus Christ.
---Michelle on 2/4/08

Any deliverance that you might receive at the emergent village will be short lived if you go back through the door of false beliefs.
Those coming out are unable to really see it clearly until they've left it completely.
Anyone leading others or participating in this "new age" re-emergent type of worship will find themselves oppressed and/or oppressing others if they remain in this manifesting church of false beliefs.
---Michelle on 2/4/08

Prayer will not help, if friend remains in an environment that promotes further oppression. The friend will have to come out from among them and separate themselves from what is causing the oppression.
That is the way a deliverance works. There is a continued responsibility on the part of the one that is delivered to remain so, with God's help - staying away from all idols, false worship, false teachers and false prophets.

Well, Cindy could mean me. I have not been doing so great in purity and honesty.

Rita...he's presbyterian? I thought presbyterianism has a passive sort of salvation thing, of just deciding one is saved, without ever really changing from being a sinner, but just claiming to be predestined. This would keep a person in his human character which is so available to Satanic effects...including worry, also, which is so cruelly oppressive.

Michelle, I'm not sure if you are asking which church I attend or which church he attends but neither of us attend a seeker friendly church. Mine is evangelical and his is presbyterian. I would say that both are very different from the seeker friendly type churches.

I know what's hit, the spirit of lust.
This is not the first time, nor will it be the last. It's been there for a very long time. What we have now, is an open door.
Opportunity staring 'friend' in the face.
Friend's spouse has taken a leave of absence and friend is wanting to make a move. Nothing new, because friend needs a serious deliverance from the spirit of lust, and a lying spirit. Friend will destroy everyone around her, because friend truly does have the spirit of Jezebel.
---Cindy on 2/3/08

I knew about 'friend' weeks and weeks ago., because some of us besides 'friend' have gifts. I know that may be hard for 'friend' to grasp.
If 'friend' follows through, many will find out. The ripple effect will be felt not only through friend's family but many others.

Friend has a spirit of lust and lying. It's severe. Friend really can't go elsewhere for help because friend's house might fall down. But if friend doesn't go for help/deliverance, it is a house of cards waiting to cave in.
---Cindy on 2/3/08

A spirit of lust and lying doesn't come on overnight. It's been there a long time.
If you know a sold out, blood bought Christian that knows how to give the friend a deliverance, you better drive that friend over there, right now.

Are you a member of an emergent seeker friendly church?

If so, you could find yourself in a state of spiritual oppression.
---Michelle on 2/3/08

I have been oppressed by the powers of darkness. It would be so much I couldn't bear it. When Satan attacks my mind, I just take some time to myself, talk to the Lord and read my bible. Sometimes Satan attacks us where we have fallen and picks on what is the most important thing between you and God. After you get over this, continue to pray and read you bible for the rest of your life.

Additional information. He (a Christian for more than 30 years) does not know what has hit him. Out of the blue (it seems) temptations, that he thought would never affect him, are battering him from all sides. He has no desire to go to church, read God's word or pray. He is tempted to commit a sin which will completely ruin his long and happy marriage (so far it's all thought, not action). He just does not know where all this has come from or why the devil is targetting him this way like never before.
---RitaH on 2/3/08

Oppressed by the devil. I guess he or she is depressed and ought to read Psalm 37. Keeping close to the Word of God, going to a place he can find God present (various places are more holy than others and not necessary to go to churches for this). Silence. A bit of companionship as in a quiet retreat, camping or whatever with a good friend. Counting blessings and fixing eyes on the promises of God.

God reveals these things to people who have solitarily died to self, (alive to God and all others) we call them intercessors.
Often times it's the people closest to us that we are not given anything on because we really can't be fully trusted not to cross a line in judgment.

I'd be grateful that we have such a God, and humbly ask that if I cannot see that someone else who will care can.
Ask angels to their defense and protection. Include this person in activities as often as possible.
