You have "stipulations" and conditions by which you ascertain if your fellow man is your brother, interesting! According to your understanding on Salvation, once you get it, it matters not what you do, you can't lose it. But it matters to you what your brother says or do and if he does not confess to your creed then he is not your brother! Are you perchance aware of another book of Genesis for those who you say are not your brother? My Bible says that it is God's doing which makes man a living soul (Gen 2:7). Are you saying that the devil makes "living souls"? If not, all men are created by God and are therefore brothers one to another.
---Nana on 6/27/08

No! No! The Bibles teaches that before you are saved, you are the children of Satan. Do not ever flatter the unsaved.++
---catherine on 6/26/08

No. It is not right to call anyone who is not Saved your "brother" or "sister" in Christ YAHUSHUA. If they are not adopted into GOD's family, how can you consider them your brother or sister? The unsaved are GOD's ENEMIES until they accept Salvation. GOD is willing that no one perish, but, people have to choose for themselves to be Saved and become a part of the family of GOD. It's a CHOICE. It's not an "automatic".

---Nana my answer would be that he is not your brother NOR EVER WAS!!!!! There are many people in church, who call themselves Christian. But of course that does not make them Christian.
The only stipulation I would put on this statement it would need be a serious matter, not the color of the carpet or something similarly insignificant. Over the years, many have been attempted to get me to take their side in disputes with others and my answer to them is God forgave you and me, surely you can look over this. And if a Christian make the mistake of having a serious disagreement with a fellow Christian, the true Christian, the real Christian, will hasten to the other man and apologize.

"What does it mean to you, Matthew 18:17: "And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican." Does that mean he is not your brother anymore? Mark V, Mima and Rebecca D, could you answer that?"

You know them by discernment and by the fruits that they bare. And by listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit. When we ask God,He gives us discernment and wisdom. And you will always know them by their actions, their words, and their deeds...You put the Word of God out there and they will either take it or leave it...One who rejects the Word of God is rejecting "Jesus"...There are some people who call themselves Christian that absolutely do not believe the Word of God...To be cont'd.
---Elisabeth on 5/26/08

People who do not believe God and His Word are Un-believers. If there is something in you that does not believe God or His Word that something is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is "The Spirit of Truth".The devil is the "father of lies".It is that plain and simple. If one rejects any part of God's Word they are rejecting Jesus "The Word".Rather one believes it or not!Read Matthew 7:23!This verse explains in detail just what happens to those who choose to do this.
---Elisabeth on 5/26/08

True Christians walk in the Light and the unsaved walk in darkness...
We are children of The Most High God and we have come into Covenant With God...They have not...However, God loves the unsaved just as much as He Loves the children of God and it is His Absolute will for every person to be saved. And He knows the one's that are going to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and the one's that are going to reject Him as Lord and Savior...He is an all-Knowing God...And a merciful longsuffering God.

Who can know the deeper things of God?
How in the world would you know if they are your brother and sister, when most people making those decisions are not saved themselves?
---lisa on 4/22/08

I like Gordon's answer to this question.
---Mima on 4/22/08

People IN Christ are brethren IN Christ (Jesus's BODY is all the true brethren IN Christ, THE true church), but the all of the unsaved people in the world are your "neighbor". In God's eyes, all of our fellow human beings are brothers and sisters. We may 'feel' a kinship with the brethren IN Christ (we should), but we should not SHOW partiality to them over the unsaved, for if we show partiality, we sin (James 2:1 and 2:9). Neither will the TRUE brethren burden each other with special requests.
---greg on 3/31/08

well I canonly say ,or ask,how did jesus treat those in sin?as lepers?did he eat with them?did he go into their homes,or wait for them to come into his church?did he condem them as being a non brother? NOPE, and neither should we.
---tom2 on 3/29/08

Mark V.,
That was a fine exposition of Matthew 18 as regards
resolving issues amongst ourselves. Of that much I
was also aware, however the question still remains
unanswered, Does that mean he is not your
brother anymore?

Nana, concerning Matt. 18:17, if you go to verse 15 you will read he is a brother in the church. And that he has sinned against your person. First, you are to privately talk to him about what he did against you in a loving manner. Second, if he refuses to repent, take two or more brothers with you, if he still refuses to hear them and you, you are to take it to the church leaders, and if he still refuses to repent, they are to treat him as a heathen and a tax collector.
---Mark_V. on 3/20/08

#2. Nana: The presciption for church discipline in vv. 15-17 must be read in light of the parable of the lost sheep in vv. 12-14. The goal of this process is restoration. If successful, you have gained a brother if you speak to him privately. If he remains impenitent, follow step 2. Take two or more with you to fulfill the principle of Deut. 19:15. If he refuses to repent you go to step 3. That matter requires that you report what has been done, to the whole church leaders.
---Mark_V. on 3/20/08

No. If you are a Saint, a Christian, a true follower of YAHUSHUA Ha Mashiach (Jesus Christ), then it is not right to call an unbeliever your brother or sister. How CAN you truly call them your Brother or Sister if they are not at all a part of the Family of GOD? Some people believe that EVERYONE are "GOD's Children" since GOD made everyone. GOD (YAH) is everyone's CREATOR, but, GOD's CHILDREN are only those who are redeemed by the Blood of YAHUSHUA and are FOLLOWING and OBEYING Him.
---Gordon on 3/20/08

#3. Nana: The church can then lovingly pursue the sinning brothers reconciliation. But if they fail they must go to step 4, and that means that the offender must be excommunicated, regarded by the church as a "heathen and a tax collector" in reference to 5:46,47. The idea is not merely to punish the offender, or to shun him completely, but to remove him as a detrimental influence from the fellowship of the church, and henceforth to regard him as an evangelistic prospect rather then a brother.

#4. Nana: Since no one in the church knows for sure if a person is saved or not, but God, they have to assume that if a person does not repent no matter what, that his evidence is the only thing they can go by. Verse 19 "if two of you agree on earth" the promise applies to the issue of discipline discussed in vv. 15-17. The "two of you" spoken of here harks back to the two or three witnesses involved in step 2 of the discipline process. Hope I answered your question.
---Mark_V. on 3/20/08

All 2,
What does it mean to you, Matthew 18:17: "And if he shall
neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he
neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an
heathen man and a publican." Does that mean he is not your
brother anymore? Mark V, Mima and Rebecca D, could you
answer that?
---Nana on 3/20/08

You gave a great answer!
---Nana on 3/20/08

Indeed I am faulting to love my neighbor as myself if
I consider myself to be a brother but not them. It is a
double standard, specially from those of you that say
that you still sin and would always sin as long as you
are in your unruly bodies. So you are a sinner and your
brother is a sinner, but you set yourself as better than him?

Robyn...Would you consider a Muslem, Buddhist, Hindu to be your Christian brother or sister????
---Susie on 3/19/08

First of all no one knows who is save and who is not saved. Some here claim they do, but that is not possible. We can assume they are lost or saved by the evidence of their conduct in life. But to be sure, no one can. By definition, the unsaved are not your brothers, they are children of the devil. The children of God are a chosen people. We should treat those we think not save as brothers just because we don't know for sure. Jesus prayed not for the world but His children.
---Mark_V. on 3/19/08

#2. Mima is correct in the definition. Jesus was not talking to disciples of Abraham, "...If you were Abrahams children, you would do the works of Abraham" John 8:39gives a clear indication that they were not disciples. Jesus was defining who were God's children and who was not. The lost don't listen to Christ. "and the desires of your father you want to do" gives a clear reason why they are not children of God. They have a different father.

Yes we all came from Adam and Eve. And yes, we would not recognize Paul as a child of God. The reason being Paul was not a child of God before he was saved. Fact that we are all humans products of Adam and Eve, who lost their innocence in the Garden of Eden, does not mean that we are brothers. Because some or saved, and some are lost. Those that are lost our brothers to those that are lost. Those that are saved our brothers to those that are saved.
---Mima on 3/19/08

In the bible the sinners were called sinners, the backsliders were called backsliders, and the Christians were called brothers and sisters. Yes we are to love everyone and treat everyone with respect. Even God is dividing the goats from the sheep. When we call our fellow (true)Christian our brother or sister in Christ, they are among the sheep.
---Rebecca_D on 3/18/08

No, because they have a different father. Jesus is my Papa, but the devil is the father of the unsaved.
---Eloy on 3/18/08

Alan of UK, Good Point! Who are we to judge. If I had met the Apostle Paul before the Lord met him on the road to Damascus, I might have assumed him to not be a child of the King.
---trey on 3/18/08

Susie: You answered the question and contradicted yourself all in the same breath. As I stated before: we are to treat all peoplewith respect. God made us all. Who are you to say who is saved and who is not? Titles mean nothing in the end. Some persons you are calling bro and sis now could be unsaved. As you stated earlier. So why not forget about titles and receive all people with love.As Jesus commands us to do.We all will be better for it.
---Robyn on 3/18/08

NO. it is not right. These are the children of Satan. God's people has been adopted into the family of God. Lets not be confused. A few are the children of God. "A whole bunch are the children of Satan". Jesus said it.
---catherine on 3/18/08

No it isn't right to call the unsaved your brothers and sisters. Because the unsaved is not a Christians bother or sister in Christ. A sinner can't be called a brother or sister in Christ, because they are not in Christ.

Mima::after answereing Alans question could you please explain how this text applies to people of your churchas Bro and sisters. The text you used is talking of True disciples when they claimed to be children of Abraham and at the same time trying to put Him to does this apply would you boldly make a statement that you are wrong by condeming your fellow man .Mind you are human like us all.
---Emcee on 3/17/08

Unsaved people are not your Christian brother or sister. However, when judgment day comes, you might be surprised how many of the people you call brother or sister aren't really Christians. It could even include your pastor. Hopefully, it won't include you. Have you been born again? Are you the same person you were before you say you were saved? Think about these questions.
---Susie on 3/17/08

It's not wrong in every case, you could consider it prophecy, and apply your faith to it as such.

Whether you do or not is unimportant. We are to treat all people courteously and Christ-like whenever we can. Sister/brother is only a title. Titles has nothing to do with the condition of our hearts. This is what God looks at.
---Robyn on 3/17/08

Regardless of what you call your neighbor....your neighbor is your neighbor.

Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
If you don't like your neighbor, love your neighbor as you love yourself.

It's legalism to think of yourself more highly than your neighbor.

God rejects the proud and haughty.
---Cindy on 3/17/08

NO they are not your brothers and sisters in Christ. And the scripture that applies is John 8:44,"44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. They are to be loved, prayed for and respected, but they are not your brothers and sisters.
---Mima on 3/17/08

Before you ask that question, there is another question you ahould ask of yourself and that is, What gives you the right to decide whether they're saved or not?

Nurture the potential of them becoming our brothers and sisters . . . relate with them as with ones you want to become your brothers and sisters in Jesus.

If you *don't* call someone brother or sister, when others in your church do, then make sure you are right about that person not being saved (o:

And call the person by name and give the person loving attention...not just correctness of what you call the person.
