My daughter too is mentally ill and I pray for her healing always. She has lost custody of her two boys because she can not take care of them. I know your sorrow and how difficult it is waiting for God to grant us what we hope for. Jesus hears us and is close to those who suffer. I think there is so much evil in the world that He is asking us to carry this particular cross, to offer our suffering for sinners. He redeemed souls in His passion and He wants our prayer of suffering for others. This gives me peace and my many prayers for my daughter have put good people in her life and I see little "miracles". I will put your daughter in my daily prayers, please keep Karin in yours and we mothers will storm heaven! Bless you.

Rhonda -- I have worked many years in a profession where I have known literally hundreds of people who have been prescribed medication for "mental imbalance". Some have not responded well because of the wrong drug or wrong dose, or even the wrong diagnosis. People are not identical. BUT MANY people are living useful lives today because of psychotropic medication.
---Donna66 on 9/8/09

Rhonda -- Mostly you don't know what you are talking about. But you are partly right

"partly right" LOL and then by your own assumption you are completely right??

If I didn't know what I was talking about then you look more foolish by stating I'm partly right ...but that didn't seem to register

UNTIL you actually KNOW someone who was prescribed LEGAL DRUGS for a "mental imbalance" only to find out there never was any ....HEARTBREAKING to see them AFTER they come off drugs HAZE lifts and they are devastated at WASTED years on pretty pills Doctor prescribed so Dr could have ANOTHER patient seeing him SEVERAL times a year isn't uncommon Doctors are ONLY highly paid hourly employee's
---Rhonda on 9/8/09

Rhonda -- Mostly you don't know what you are talking about. But you are partly right .Prescription drugs are over-advertised, (they needn't be advertised at all)
Doctors get annoyed at these ads too. People come to them demanding the drugs they've seen advertised...without knowing if it is appropriate for THEM, or if another drug, or NO drug would be better.. Some Dr's give them what they want to avoid discord.

Doctors don't get residual nor kickbacks on drugs. The pens and notepads are advertising gimmicks, not "perks". Cruises and dinners with "open bar" are perks that drug companies use to "educate" medical people.

Some drugs are over-used or misused. But many are life-savers and a gift from God.

You cannot come up with one study that says "IT is a FACT that the majority are NUMBED up on drugs today ..."
---NurseRobert on 8/26/09

one study??? they get the LEGAL DRUG users into a room and determine if they behave a certain numbed up look ...or do they just answer some standard questionnaire LOL

statistics of DRUGS sold is not an indication of a pretty pill society?? when every commercial break has an ad for several DIFFERENT DRUGS ...magazines newspapers common websites PUSHING DRUGS

denial or blind

STATISTICS of legal drugs sold don't LIE ....maybe your study can whitewash REALITY of the dollar amount of legal drugs sold
---Rhonda on 9/5/09

libel? fascinating in sue happy US society a "christian" is first to jump on the "libel wagon" understanding that better than Holy Word of God

society worships doctors and medical profession doing whatever they say candy for EVERY little whim commercial go to Dr TELL Dr which pretty colored pill

prescriptions not a one-time fix ...meds for "mental balance" taken for years now Dr has REASON to have patient come back OVER AND OVER ...Dr's with patients on LEGAL DRUGS make residual income ...THAT is the kickback clue about "pens" and how an 89cent pen is a perk LOL ...EXTRA office visits to keep taking the pretty colored pill are a kickback
---Rhonda on 9/5/09

Rhonda, the national enquirer and World Wide news are probably not your best source of information.

You cannot come up with one study that says "IT is a FACT that the majority are NUMBED up on drugs today ..."
---NurseRobert on 8/26/09

Hi I read this and thought of myself,I'm bipolar and for many years struggled with it,I was diagnosed at age 16 I am now 32 and doing great. It took me a long time to get here though.I went through a period of not taking my medication and ended up in the mental hospital. It took me having a son to open my eyes because I was afraid of turning on him.See my mom used to abuse me and I was taken out of my home at the age of 12.I know God has been the light through a dark tunnel that I was going through,he will help you get through this, trust me I have learned this personaly.I will pray for you..just don't give up.
---erika on 8/26/09

Rhonda: You are definitely clueless on the mental health system, and psychotropic medication. You really should not talk about something you know so little about. Kickbacks from drug companies are not legal. They can't even get pens anymore.

As for having the patients do research, the patient is so off the hook, they have no clue what is happening to them, or around them, and are unable to do any research. Without the meds, they stand no chance of living a normal life, and being able to participate in society at any level.

Most psychotropic medication does not "numb" the patient, but allows the patient to begin to think rationally, and make sound decisions for their self-care and well-being.
---Trish9863 on 8/26/09

Rhonda -- If you state that something is a FACT (a controversial one, anyway) you should be prepared to provide some documentation for need to cite all references. One will do.

I say your libel of doctors is, for the most part, unwarranted and unfounded.
---Donna66 on 8/26/09

NurseRobert many dozens of publications from medical profession and LEGAL drug industry ...I have neither time nor inclination to provide you with all of them or even one ...this information isn't HIDDEN ...YOUR due diligence would provide information if you truly need or want it ...most don't really want to know this because they blindly TRUST Doctors who in many cases get kick backs for writing prescriptions ...most importantly the RESIDUAL income of having a patient using drugs and requirement of drug is to be seen regularly ...something most don't want to SEE because they prefer to go along with the medical establishment and system rather than do their homework before becoming another enslaved LEGAL drug user

---Rhonda on 8/26/09

IT is a FACT that the majority are NUMBED up on drugs today ...

get your facts straight before you give your brand of medical advice which is to make sure people are doped up on legal drugs
---Rhonda on 8/24/09

Rhonda, just where do you get your "facts"?

Back it up with a source.
---NurseRobert on 8/26/09

At least one *prescribed* drug has been blamed for people committing suicide. So, I won't make blanket statements, *either* way. I think a psychiatric medication can be used as a "chemical handcuff". But ones admit meds can not actually *cure* a mental or personality problem. I can see why > we humans have a spiritual level, deeper than the chemistry of our brains. And spiritual beings do have emotions > God has feelings and emotions He shares with us in His love (1 Corinthians 6:17). And Satan can abuse us with his dominating and cruel emotions > Ephesians 2:2.
---Bill_bila5659 on 8/25/09

Rhonda, I'm on a couple of psychiatric medications myself, PLEASE don't compare medication with the beast, or anti-Christ--thank you. My medications help me and I consider them a God-send!

Medical advice ...if stating FACTS is giving medical advice than we are in a world far more decayed than I thought mid 1980's the US spent about 60 Million on anti-depressant medications

By year 2000 it has soared to MORE than 120 Billion (Billion not million)

IT is a FACT that the majority are NUMBED up on drugs today for NEVER seeing anyone healed by bi-polar what you are MISSING are the MANY who are MISDIAGNOSED every year with bi-polar who DO NOT HAVE IT

Watch your intake. Our food is laced with drugs. Also, don't take drugs(pharmeceuticals). There are great natural alternative methods that are much more successful (because they aren't medically flaws or designed for you to become dependent on them).

My daughter is 38 and the same way. Tells me last night she was with our Bishop in the chapel and he saw the demons but does not know how to help her. She desperately needs hospitalization and medication but denies she is bipolar. She insists it is demonic possession and she needs an exorcism. She has seen several priests over the years and they all have told her she does not have demons. She has no place to live and has not worked in ages. Plus she drinks till passing out much of the time. We love her dearly but feel helpless. Prayer is the only thing we can do and I will pray for your daughter too. We need miracles here.

Having grown up with mental illness in my home, and suffering myself as a believer, and working in mental health field, I understand it, and can say you are dead wrong

And likewise you are also dead wrong ...more than 85% of all people on medications for "mental illness" do not belong on them ...this is a growing concern for Doctors who do not believe giving out candy (aka prescription drugs) WHICH ALSO CHEMICALLY ALTER one's brain hormones and many other body functions

Doctors and drugs are worshiped today ...many brainwashed into believing a pretty colored pill will make their life better ...BEAST system deceives world into believing medical science is the ONLY way

ONLY God can make one's life better
---Rhonda on 1/28/09

Bryan: You are making blanket statements that could cost someone their life. Are you a medical doctor? Have you done the research on brain chemistry, and mental illness? You should not be making such blanket statements to someone who is seeking help for mental illness. Having grown up with mental illness in my home, and suffering myself as a believer, and working in mental health field, I understand it, and can say you are dead wrong.
---Trish9863 on 1/28/09

First you need to realize that bipolar is not biblical. If your daughter is depressed it's not some chemical embalance. When I got saved they diagnosed me schizophrenic, but the world doesn't understand the spiritual. I didn't have a relationship with the Lord. There are lots of people out there today that the world has diagnosed, but the simple truth is that all of our illnesses and so called mental problems are really spiritual problems. Your daughter is under attack, and she needs the Word of God, not man made medication. Anyone who puts their trust in mans ways puts limits on the God of Jacob! She needs to get into the Word! I'll pray for her! My God is able!

There are two types of illnesses, physical and spiritual. Physical illness can be treated by a doctor and medicine, but when the medication fails to heal the patient over the years then comes in the spiritual part which can only be solved by Jesus Christ. Read Luke 8:26:35
Bipolar is the issue of her daughter, for her to mention the word bipolar this means she has taken her daughter to a psychiatrist, it means she has been taking medication which clearly has not worked over the years that is why she is at the end of her rope. Obviously something is manipulatig the mind of her daughter, causing her to have hormone imbalance , something beyond the control of doctors and medicine. That is why I suggested deliverance prayers in Jesus Name.
---caroa9397 on 9/5/08

Amen Donna, you guys are absolutely right--mental illness can sometimes look like a spiritual problem. I've had people make my own mental health problems worse by telling me how much I'm in sin for having these struggles! Agh! At least I know better now than to listen to those people, I know they often mean well though but sometimes when trying to "heal" people wind up "wounding".
---Mary on 9/4/08

Nicola, you explained it very well.

Most mental illness is not a "spiritual" problem. It may SEEM so to others or even the sufferer herself, because it's very hard to draw near to the Lord when the brain is not co-operating. The lack of spiritual desire is often less a CAUSE of mental illness, than a RESULT.

I thank God over and over for my meds. When they began to work (and it may take a month or more for some meds) I could pray again! I could praise again! I found myself humming hyms and choruses I thought I'd forgotton. Some think that psychotropic drugs dull spirituality. It's not so.
---Donna66 on 9/4/08

Hey mama,
Sometimes when we have a brain injury or something up with our bodies that affects our brain chemistry we think it's about us. Not about our bodies as being bodies like having a heart attack or broken bones. We think our brains are "us" so to speak.
Kindly remind her that the brain is not her but an organ that needs some help. If she had heart problems would she be against nitro or chemo for cancer? It happens. This doen't make her a BAD EVIL PERSON but someone who just has to take care of her brain organ.
Let her know you love her, (like you dont already) and you'll stand by her no matter what and you can't just stand by while she's not doing anything to help herself be well.
God Bless you too. xo

I had a student who was bipolar. Her family did not want to put her on meds. However, as the teenage years set in her behavior became uncontrolable. Finally she was on meds. and her behavior/personality changed for the best. She became a top student. There are some new meds. that are apparently very good. Given your daughter is an adult she has the right to refuse any meds. or help unless she is a danger to her self and/or others. I pray that God grant you and her direction and wisdom in this matter.

Very sorry to read this sad situation. I am not generally in favour of vaccinations, or medication of any kind, however, in the case of a chemical imbalance that is throwing everyone's lives into misery, I would advise going to a Psychiatric hospital with your daughter and getting some SUITABLE drug for her. If she shows the slightest allergic reaction to it cease it immediately and ask for a change of medication. By such methods you will find a solution to your problems. There are some brilliant drugs out there for our benefit. It is bad for society when people are either locked away, as unbearable, or going around with an imbalance that causes unpredictable antisocial behaviour. I pray for you all.
---frances008 on 9/2/08

I was diagnosed bipolar 2 about 10 years ago. It was very difficult to find that God allowed such a thing to happen in my life. I had been a Christian for 30 years at that time.
I noticed deliverance mentioned for your daughter and I know all about that. It is so irritating that Christians and most everyone else, do not know that Bipolar is a chemical imbalance of the brain.
It can be controlled by medications that are becoming more and more effective.
I would encourage your daughter to get professional help as soon as possible. There are many resources available for you both on line as well.
I will be praying, you can bet on it.

I have been going to a group for almost 2 years now called DBSA. Depression, Bipolor, Support Assistance. Mostly they go by DBSA. This group started years ago. I just heard about it 1 1/2 years ago and it has helped me a lot. Along with God and medicne. Anyone can go that is in need of support or better understanding how to cope. Check the web. for one near you.

Her abnormal moods are something she cannot willfully control.
---Donna66 on 8/7/08

That's why I advised what I did, as Christians the first thing we think to do is pray, the last place we look is how we might give place to her problem.

If you're excusing your own breakdown over the mess she's in, (and this is a VERY emotional issue for a Mother regardless of age) you're not making sure you're giving that little push that'll start the landslide of love that our Father is.

God bless dear ones, I hope your daughter find remedy in Christ's divine will for her life.

Susie B is correct. Treatment for mental illness must be voluntary.

Persons with bi-polar disorder are often eager to receive help when they are depressed. They accept the needed medications. But, in the manic phase (an extremely hyperactive state) it's not unusual for them to refuse medication because they feel inordinately capable, energetic and/or in very high spirits. Modern psychotropic drugs are remarkably effective...but only if a person takes them.
If this is the case with Ruby's daughter, prayer is certainly needed...either for the Lord to heal her outright or for her to take her medication until He does. Her abnormal moods are something she cannot willfully control.
---Donna66 on 8/7/08

My only comment is this: Is she really bipolar? It seems "bipolar" has become a "catch all" term for anything doctors to use if they can't find anything else. (Don't mean to make "lite" of the situation, but this is my personal opinion although I'm NOT medically qualified in this area.) It's also something that a person states about people they know if they can't think of anything else to blame their behavior on.

Has your daughter really been tested for this problem by a qualified physican? It can be controlled!
---wivv on 8/6/08

The problem is that Ruby's daughter is 44-years old and unless she is threatening suicide or to harm someone else, no one can force her to get treatment or take her meds. Where I used to work, we had many clients who were mentally ill. They were actually the most motivated clients as they were grateful that they finally got somewhere that would help them stabilize their lives. Many of them found Jesus in that program. Some needed to continue their meds. Some did not as their medical providers found that their mental illnesses went away after removing drugs from their lives. Some had self-medicated with meth, speed, alchol, etc, for years. Ruby, please let us know how you two are doing. We are praying for you both.
---SusieB on 8/5/08

While watching TV, you can get "baptized" into a secular program which takes you along without you even knowing where you are going. You can become *surrendered* to the movie or show, so, that you let it take you anywhere, even *trusting* it . . .

Instead of learning how to yield to *God* at each moment and discover where *He so more worthy than TV* would please to take you, at each moment.

In submitting to emotional rollar coaster rides of movies etc. (which often nurture *unforgiveness* toward certain characters, by the way), etc., this can help train you to emotionally go up and down with things of this world, so you are weak enough to become bipolar.

Is your daughter saved? Are you saved? If the answer is yes, the first thing you need to know is to forget all these people with fancy degrees. As much as they claim to know with all their research, God knows more. What does God know? He knows that rarely is it some kind of chemical imbalance in the brain. What else does God know? He knows the devil, and how much damage he can do to your mind. God's ways is not like ours. He believes in slow healings sometimes. And he believes in not healing you from all of your afflictions, because it will keep you in prayer and close to Him. Please get to know God. Satan you have been let off the hook for too long, you stand and laugh you know you are guilty. Go jump in a lake, a lake of FIRE!

If I were you I would make sure that grace has a safe place in your home, that vindication, and justification of anger (start with your own) are NEVER tolerated again, and for Heaven's sake limit TV time. **
Amen Pharisee

many studies show anger resentment and unforgiveness breed more of same destroying many mentally ...less than 10% of all people on drugs for mental illness belong on them MANY are misdiagnosed or drugs given often by patient request

does she live with you is this why you're at end of rope is your safety at risk due to her unstableness?

if not then just pray ...let go and let God take care of her ..make peace with your daughters disorder or it will takes it's toll on your health by way of stress
---Rhonda on 8/4/08

Susie, you wanted to know how this bi-polar was destroing her daughters life! This term means that both lobes of this 44 yr.old womans'brain are being tormented! How desperately sorry I feel for the lady who wrote to us. She needs prayer. but she also needs action! Bi-Polar is very abnormal. She needs "hands on" action. She could go berserk!
---Danelle on 8/4/08

I can tell you that a major university study done over a 30 year period revealed that this disorder is actually reversible.

You'll never believe what they linked the change in brain chemistry to...Forgiveness.

Jesus did not lie when he said "I am the way the truth and the life."

I don't like using medicine in my body, but in this disorder the medicine does create a foundation for the process of restoration to begin.

If I were you I would make sure that grace has a safe place in your home, that vindication, and justification of anger (start with your own) are NEVER tolerated again, and for Heaven's sake limit TV time.

Re: the lady whose daughter is bi-polar.My suggestion to you is still the same. Take her to a Christian counselor who is versed in the way the world of darkness works. There is a certain denomination who will avoid this topic. The Pentecostals won't. Neither will the Catholics, though, they will insist on your daughter seeing a psychiaatrist. For Catholics, this is MANDATORY. If the medication fails, your best option is a minister versed in unclean spirits. You may vehemently disagree with me, that is your option. Would you at least talk with a Priest?

"Do what she needs to do."

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15)

"'Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.'" (Matthew 11:29)

I have bipolar disorder also and believe me its not a good thing to have. I will tell you what you have to do first you have to recognize is she cutting herself, planning to kill herself, does she spend alot of money, does she have mood swings one day she act like herself and the next day she just want to bite your head off these are just signs of mood swings because I use to have them, second you need to take her to a emergency room if she thinking about killing herself or planning to kill herself or call the police because thats what I have to do, third of all try to admit her to a mental hospital or take her to psychiarist so she can be put on medication. Bipolar isn't no joke at all. Keep praying everything will work out just give it time.

Has your daughter been diagnosed by a health care professional (Doctor) as bi-polar? Or is this the opinion of some well intentioned family members? Bipolar is treatable with medication in many situations and in others it requires other avenues of intervention. Is your daughter refusing to take her medication and seeking alternative therapies or does she not care that she has been diagnosed with a serious disorder?
---Susie on 8/2/08

Ruby - continued

Not taking the medication might destroy her life but if she is seeking alternative natural therapies this course may be longer then the chemicals that alter her brain.

You don't indicate why bipolar is destroying her life?

It's helpful to understand how bipolar is destroying her life and to impart some understanding on the "ideals" you expect to be given that you could use.
