You will know God's voice because it is.

It doesn't take experience. God spoke to the Roman soldier who was killing christians.

When you disobey, He will let you know like finding yourself in the belly of a fish. Or, like myself (twice, in fact), making $100,000 a year one day and the following day I found myself in the streets as a homeless statistic. (God does not waste time).

God talks to you in whispers or as thunder. If you are not sure, He will send someone to tell you like when Samuel heard the voice of God, but didn't recognize it until he was instructed by Eli.

Remember: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

After reading, studying and meditating on the inspired word of God you will have developed an intimate relationship with Him (through prayer) then you will know and recognize the His voice.

It's unfortunate that His voice is loud today, but no one is listening no not even most christians.

This statement from ---Mark_Eaton

"By doing what the voice tells you to do.

If the word is from God, then God will work out the details and confirm it was from Him" is correct and very reassuring.
---mima on 3/24/09

By doing what the voice tells you to do.

If the word is from God, then God will work out the details and confirm it was from Him. Remember Romans 8:28?

If it is from anywhere else, you may fall flat on your face but you will learn a great lesson. You may also begin to learn the true voice of God. However, if you do not follow God's bidding, you will NEVER learn His voice.

There are so many voices that we can listen to. Only by doing what God asks us to do can we "learn" what the voice of God sounds like. We also learn true obedience.

Amen catherine! Since he is completely trustworthy he must first train us to follow before he can lead us into some of the places where we might be at first hesitant to go. He's not above sending us here and there just to train us. When he called Abram out he didn't tell him where (..'go to the place I will show you') and Abram went in faith. Abrams glory was proving he would follow and obey in anything and he got a new name that we all now know. This was a sign and an open invitation for us.

So we have to guard our heart from thinking the place matters so much. Our old hearts are always wanting to set up a permanent dwelling in the place he sends us instead of just being happy in the knowledge that he is leading us.

For me it was gradual, the trust a father builds with his son. First vague dreams and emotions stirred up in me that I could never understand. Then more and more vivid dreams, ideas and emotions. People now ask me how I know a dream was from God and I always now say "you will know" because the dreams now stand out as something bizarre and so full of unexpected information that I have to tell someone or I will bust. I wonder if it was gradual because I didn't pray as much or was too full of my own desires when I was younger or if that's just the way he works. Probably all that. The way I learned to know and trust God speaking to me is that he always spoke words of truth that I would then find in the bible....

Bruce5656 - Have you ever heard of Prophecy? This is when God speaks to people something, and they are to speak it to someone else. It is when they declare "Thus says the Lord". It will always line up with the Bible, or they are a false prophet. Yes, God speaks to people through the Bible, but also through special revelation. Such revelations came to people throughout the Bible, including to John who wrote the book of Revelation. Such revelations still come to people today.

I am reminded of something a speaker said once: "The one man you cannot help is the man who says "God told me."

I agree with the comments below that talk about God "speaking" through his word and circumstances etc.

Most often, we truly know that we have been led by the Holy Spirit in retrospect. When something is over and we can look back at it and see the hand of God in what transpired.

One person here stated ,it takes a lot of experience.I am not comfortable with this although one as myself, as others may do, experience my Father in heaven much more clearly and frequently as the years pass as we continue to remain in communication.
I remember that all Jesus' followers feared the apostle Paul for he was the one who anounced the executions for his men to carry out upon the followers of Jesus.
Then one day Paul ,for unknown reasons to us, experienced the sudden reality of God.He became God conscious.
I do not know of any prior spiritual experiences with God Paul had until the time of his faithful conversion .This one sudden experience suddenly transformed Paul into a household name.

Takes a lot of experience. The best way is to stay in prayer. God can be very strange, this I am finding out. He might lead you one-way and take another way. It could blow your ever-loving mind. Only it won't. Praise the Living God. God helped Moses. He will help you.

You can hear God in the stillness/quietness
of your heart/soul, fasting & praying help in this matter...

Answer to blog "?",
IF the Lord spoke to you, you would know it,
believe me, you just know, plus whatever he tell's you, happens!
---Duane_Dudley_Martin_Jr. on 3/11/09

Ditto Elder! That's the bottomline, Genesis - Revelation. Get into the Word of God (the Bible) & the Word of God will get into you. (Jn. 10:1-16)
---Leon on 3/10/09

I think that you can hear God when you have an private relation with Him.
I like this question a lot.

His Voice is His word and His word is His voice.

If you are putting the word inside of you, memorizing scripture, standing on it for your life, and know who you are in Christ Jesus, then it's the Holy Spirit's job to "bring to your rememberance" all that is stored up inside of you."

The Lord is gentle and humble in heart. It won't be a forceful or condemming thing, that's the devil. People usually give their opinion first before they quote a scripture to back up what they're saying. That's bad to do.

If you have God's word inside of you, the HS will bring it to your rememberance and speak to you.

Seek the Lord in prayer, if the flesh gets in the way, start fasting. Seek HIM and dont let go.

To borrow a statement from a group study I am doing with some inmates here in Florida, "God speaks by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, church, circumstances, and prayer to reveal Himself, His purposes, and His ways." You do have to be careful to make sure that what you here agrees with Scripture bcause God does not contradict Himself. As one preacher who I heard on a set of tapes said, "If you go with the Bible ONLY, you get "legalism, if you go with the Spirit" only you get licentiousness, but with the Bible and the Spirit you get the whole counsel of God."

God speaks to His children constantly. We are so busy that we don't hear Him.

If you seek God with all of your heart, and allow yourself to be still before Him, he will speak to you.

We tend to put God in a box and believe that He must speak in a certain way. God will speak one way one time, and quite another the next.
---Richard on 3/7/09

For the best answer to this question I know, I refer you to a Chris Rice's song.
v. 1
"I would take "no" for an answer, just to know I heard You speak.
And I'm wonderin' why I've never, seen the signs they claim they see.
Lot of special revelations, meant for everybody but me.
Maybe I don't truly know You, or maybe I just simply believe."
"Now I've never felt the presence but I know You're always near,
But I've never heard the calling but somehow You've led me right here.
So I'm not looking for burning bushes, or some divine graffiti to appear.
I'm just beggin You for your wisdom and I believe You're puttin' some here!"
---bruce5656 on 3/6/09

God speaks to us through His Written Word. Oh, how many times must we say this? If it does not line up with what God has written you can be sure it is not His voice you hear.
Realize also that God is not an exhibitionist. He does not "show off." The Holy Spirit brings attention to the sacrifice of Christ.
Take time to read and learn His Word and you will know His voice. There is no guess work involved in this. Know Him, know His Word and receive the benefit of knowing His voice.

To know that God has spoken to you, do the following: Ask God to reveal to you your voice, Satan's voice, and the world's voice (so you know all the wrong voices for decernment), Ask God to reveal to you His voice, Ask God to open your spiritual ears to hear His voice, Don't talk - listen (this may take some practice and patience), expect to hear God's voice, Write down (journal) what God says. God may speak in several forms: through Holy Spirit (still small voice - most common), Jesus comming personally to you through a vision, God's voice audibly to you, through the Bible (another common way), and through a person (Prophetic).

You will know because his sheep hears his voice. My problem is that, I tend to question God on what he wants me to do. I say, You want me to do what Lord? Your spirit will know when God is speaking to you, and be ready if he leads you to do something because Satan will be attacking.

If a person truly wants to hear from God, they need to do indepth study of His Word, The Bible.
---Rob on 3/6/09

If God says something to me, He knows what He means better than I can understand. So, I just sow it to Him for Him to do what He knows He means. And I find this by simply obeying at each moment how He rules me in my heart in His peace > "And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15) I'd say He has said things to and over ten years later it would come to pass while I wasn't even thinking about it, then AFTER it happened I'd remember what I had been told. If He tells me something for immediate action, I'm just submitting, anyway, so He just has me do what He means.

"How can a person know when the Lord has spoken to him or her?"

If the voice heard was wavering, excusatory or uncertain, it was yours.
If demanding, accusatory or condemning, it was Satan's.
If soft, gentle, direct, and in agreement with that which can be verified through the context of His written word and provides peace, quietness or conviction within, It was the Holy Sprit.
---josef on 3/6/09

thinking about writing a book. Title will be RUNNING ON EMPTY. Meaning, without the spirit living within you are by all accounts, RUNNING ON EMPTY. HOW CAN YOU HEAR WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW? when you live only in the world your tank is empty. you need the spirit. a christainas life , a christians ears, a christians heart works only when the tank is full of the spirit.
---tom2 on 3/6/09

If you could sincerely and truly express the kind of sentiment (adoration) as in Luke 7:38, I imagine that The Lord would want to know you PERSONALLY with all of your idiosyncracies, habits, attitudes, shortcomings, etc. (He "yearns jealously", James 4:5).

Luke 7:38
"she began to wet his feet with her tears".

Only His son hung on the cross, not the bible (it is not an authority, Matthew 28:18), not the apostles or Paul, pastors, etc.

If you decide to love GOD ONLY and put nothing before Him, He, not the bible, will teach you.

Have a "faith FOR faith", Romans 1:17) for a "more excellent" devotion (1 Corinthians 12:31) based on "the greatest" (1 Corinthians 13:13).
