Struggling With My Weight
I have been struggling with my weight and I have been trying to change my eating habits,and exercising for the past year. I have only lost approximately 10 pounds. I have been on steroids for an illness for the past 16 years. Please tell me what to do to lose weight?

Lay off the French junk! I mean the sugars! Eat more veggies.. salads with touch of meat. You can also eat chili, which calms the stomach, heals ulcers, and aids digestion. I make it once a Month, summer or winter. I make a sandwich of my choice.. no sugar, and it is great. Obviously, in between I eat anything, except sugar treats! If you smoke you are 100 times more likely to have cancer if a sugar head! If you already have cancer.. sugar can make it 100 times less life on earth!

Kevin, that was great help and when you said about the cold water, I already knew the purpose of it. But what I didn't like was, beans, beans, beans. That would put your spouse in a very bad position don't you think? benefit you but not her.

Kevin you are not qualified to provide anyone with a diet as anyone recommending these foods and quantities day in and day out is a quack
no human should consume what you are recommending PERIOD
FURTHER 30 pounds a month is DANGEROUS ....when any physical body looses more than 4 pounds weekly that BODY will waste away muscle not fat all literature on dieting confirms
steroids are a drug and all drugs side affects are damaging ...if a weightlifter used steroids without exercising his muscle would turn to fat
sadly nothing anyone can do for weight when taking steroids
keep exercising to stay healthy as best as you can and drink lots of water to flush and PLEASE eat sensible not using the quack Kevin diet

suggested diet for those that desire to lose weight without exercise,
Early morning = Cheerios cereal with skim milk & fruit ( all You can eat )
seriously chow down. drink ice cold water....
mid day = salad,salad salad, veggie's and hard boiled eggs ( all You can eat) seriously chow down.drink ice cold water.
5 hours before You go to sleep = nothing but meat,meat,meat, if You are vegan nothing but beans,beans,beans( all You can eat ) more ice cold water....
maybe You are wondering about the ice cold water?
Your body burns 100 calories warming it up to body tempurature...
if You can stick to this diet You can lose about 20 to 30 pounds a month,
and not even come close to malnutrition =)

more excellent way -- I beg to differ with you about steroids. Unlike the steroids that athletes and body builders use, other steroids, like cortisone, are given by doctors for chronic conditions like asthma or arthritis. They can be life-saving for asthmatics or in the case of severe brain trauma. But they often cause weight (not muscle) gain over time.

Ruth: Do you take insulin or other oral medications for your diabetes? If you do, then fasting could cause problems with too much insulin in your system and you may become ill. If you do not take insulin or oral meds for your condition and are controlled by diet, then be cautious after the fast with regard to how you break the fast with the foods you eat. You would need to reintroduce foods somewhat more gradually than an non-diabetic. An M.D. would probably tell you to not fast regardless to avoid malpractice issues so seek God in prayer and do what He leads you to do.

I disagree,a healthy lifestyle must include some exercise,not only or even more important it is a must,and proven medical fact that the lack of exercise causes more problems.I do agree that calorie intake is the major factor and actually the logical one,if you eat more than your body needs then you gain weight,if you eat less then you loose weight,my my thats amazing.

My surgeon gave me great advice concerning weight control...make sure most of the carbs you eat come from fruits and vegetables. If you must eat bread, or cereal, make sure the fiber content is 3 grams per serving.
I was also advised years ago, shop the perimeter of the supermarket. That is where the produce, meat, and dairy aisles are. We need little from the interior, except soap and toilet paper. I do buy oatmeal, and whole grain breads.
Also, whole fruit, as opposed to fruit juice leaves you feeling more satisfied.

Don't let yourself worry too much about losing weight as it takes your focus off of God and puts it upon the flesh. Just keep doing what you are doing that caused a 10 pound loss and seek the Lord with all of your strength. Maybe when ever you feel like overeating, you could turn your thoughts and activity over to spending time in the Word and prayer. Just don't obsess over the matter. Obsess over God.

Thanks very much! I will follow your suggestions and let you know from time to time how I am doing. I forgot to tell you that I am also a diabetic. Would this affect fasting or could I fast by drinking fluids?

The steroids make it an uphill (but not impossible) battle.
The only thing that works for me is "portion control" and not more than one snack a day. I don't last long on a diet deprived of all the foods I like most (almost everything I really like is fattening).
I try to eat more vegetables and a fairly balanced diet, sure. But cutting quantities (in half approximately) does cause weight loss. It takes a few days to get used to.
But soon you find you feel fuller with much less food. Then you just have to stay aware of what you eat.

Good advice to far. Simply lay of the man made (candies, chips) and unnecessary carbs (breads, rice, potatoes) and get your carbs from fruits and veggies. Drink a lot of water, diet soda will add weight, walk 30 minutes a day at a brisk pace at least 4 days a week, and don't eat after dinner. When we were younger, eating late would turn to energy when we sleep (more growth hormone being produced in us) but as we get older, the same turns to fat.
Snack on raw fruits and veggies... and fasting a day a week really is good for the body. Drink water (and green tea sweetened with stevia-it's natural and has no carbs) and post again in a month and let us know how you are doing.

Stay away from all sodas, white flour, refine sugars..black coffee is good for killing hunger, don't over do. walking about 20 to 30 minutes aday..and if you like to dance..that works even better. No fried foods..lots of veggies, some fruits. use small plate to eat from, and remember, after a couple of hours after eating, its ok to eat a little more..just never fill your plate full. eat slow, for some reason when we eat slow, we don't seem to want as much. reserch good and healthy foods.

Pray & pray again. I prayed for a # of years for The Lord to help me to leave the sweets alone(sugar cookies, cakes, pies, rolls etc) & He did. I had an about 45" waist & couldn't bend over to tie my shoes or pick up something up from the floor. I'm a 41-42" waist size now & I don't have any prob's even feel better. I get out to walk some for exercise, I do some knee-bends & upper-body twist. I cant exercise my shoulders-arms & hands due to them damaged parts from a fall from a high ladder.
Sugar-sweets was the main prob. I can eat pizza, pasta etc & it don't bother me.
I drink 1/2 reg-cola mixed with 1/2 diet cola & it taste good to me.

Weight gain/loss has very little to do with exercise or lack thereof, and almost everything to do with diet. Specifically what you eat and how much.
A good rule of thumb is to not eat anything white, which includes refined sugar, white bread or anything with refined white flour, potatoes, pasta. Starch is the enemy of weight loss. Also reduce your milk intake and related cow milk products.
Purchase a good quality juicer. Load up on fresh vegetables with the emphasis on carrots, tomatoes, green veg's and juice them up to get their maximum nutritional benefits. Less emphasis on fruit as fruit is high in sugar. Eat whole grain bread and cereal. Goat milk and cheese is good. Drink water. No packaged "diet" foods.

As we lose weight, we need to grow in *character* to keep it off. Self-control in the Holy Spirit includes His beauty and pleasantness *satisfying* us to keep away from wrong eating. So, it's not about forcing and dominating yourself. I think, that what helps keep me in control is being attentive and sensitive to God, all the time, so this keeps me and my attention busy away from eating unnecessarily. And being busy with caring about all people keeps me more in God's love with caring sense to choose right foods and strength of self-control.

The GREAT MYTH is that safe weight loss is calorie reduction.
Calories are ENERGY and VERY important for proper body functioning/metabolism.
Good DIGESTION is the key to HEALTHY weight loss and can be accomplished within weeks.
Walking stimulates digestion and you will go to the bathroom more losing undigested food. Drink at least 2 quarts of water a day (depending on your size and weight).
The steroids are interfering with digestion (ethical doctors do not prescribe steroids), but also it is likely that you are consuming diet drinks/soda and/or foods.
Diet foods and drinks have dangerous ASPARTAME, Nutra Sweet, MSG, etc. that never should have been approved by the F.D.A. (look up these chemicals online).

Louise...Your doctor has probably already told you that steroids cause weight gain. As long as you are taking the medicine, weight gain will be a problem. However, if you walk a mile EVERY day you will compensate for the steroid use and begin losing weight.
