I finally found one their churches that has a comprehensive web sites that had doctrinal beliefs of the organization. They teach Darby's pre tribulation rapture which is heresy so they can't be Christian so there is no point at looking at any other aspect of the group.

Calvary Chapel was started in So.CA by a preacher named Chuck Smith. Now the organization has planted churches all over. And you will hear good reports and bad reports depending on who you are talking to.

(My impression is that they lie somewhere between Baptists and "Full Gospel" or Assemblies of God, in doctrine and practice) But individual churches vary some.
The only way to decide is attend one and ask for a printed doctrinal statement. Then seek the Lord's guidance in prayer.

There have always been church

Church is just an assemble of believers in Jesus christ.

Exodus 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

Karen, you may be right. As I mentioned, Calvary Chapels are soft on the Gifts to the point that many of their members have never experienced the Gifts. Yes, Assembly of God churches as a whole tend to have more of a focus on the Spiritual Gifts compared to Calvary churches. However, the main doctrines and belief systems are very close. I have worked with both ministries at the high levels with top national leaders and that is my understanding.

Moderator...You are so wrong. Calvary Chapel is a seeker-friendly, feel-good church that is mort like Baptist. Assembly of God believe in the full gospel, including being baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Try that in any Calvary Chapel and you will be silenced.

Sure there were assemblies. Still again, there was No Church before Pentecost, Acts 2 v 38. Acts 2 v 38 in the which The Church of The Living God was born.
---Lawrence on 11/5/10

correct, there was no CHURCH, Christ's risen Body of Believers before Pentecost. Jesus said of Himself, upon THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD my Church. Present tense. He didn't say, I will continue to build...

The Holy Spirit is building the Church TODAY, beginning at Pentecost.

correction, CHurch has always been the assemble of CALLED OUT ONES

Acts 7:38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and [with] our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

NEXT consider the bases of all biblical teachings:
Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Matthew 11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
Matthew 11:14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

If the church does not teach the LAW/ COmmandments of god and the testimony / prophecies that cannot be good

Rod, I agree with some of your more detailed comments. Before attending any individual church it is important to understand what that specific Pastor is going to teach and how they interact with their congregation. Yes, I agree that they have suppressed the Gifts to the point that their own members are not against the Gifts, but have become unfamiliar with them.

This is very easy to find for those who havenot yet been curropted by "Hebrews 13:9 with divers and strange doctrines."

Make this the bases on your search:

Psalms 138:2 for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar,

Malachi 3:6 For I [am] the LORD, I change not, therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.Hebrews 13:9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines

Any church that shows a change in doctrine from OT to NT cannot be a good church. They are thus teaching Hebrews 13:9 divers and strange doctrines

Calvary Chapels pastors believe that they are similar to what people believe the Pope is. Their "pastor" is the final authority, basically infallible, in the church, and the pastor does not need to submit to the elders.

This probably came down because of Chuck Smith's experience when he didn't submit to his elders many years ago.

That does not mean that God can't work in that environment. He probably does in spite of their system.

Calvary Chapel has turned into another denomenation.

I thought they did believe in the gifts, but suppressing them to not offend. I may be wrong.

Calvary Chapels are Biblical based churches and have doctrines that are closely related to Assembly of God.

I agree to look at their doctrine statements..though i am with the biblestudents and very happy being here, I attended in the past an independent fundemental baptist church. Some are KJV only, others aren't. I would start there looking at their beliefs. I'd choose the non kjv only, however that is up to you which bible translation you choose to use. I would avoid churches having more "self help"sermons, this is what alot of non-denom churches give & southern least where i went. I would look into a sound doctrine based congregation.

Before you go to any church, find out about their doctrine of faith. Find out if they preach on sin, hell, Jesus Christ being the begotten Son of God, died on a cross, rose again to save the world from their sin.

Tony, a friend of mine goes to Calvery Chapels which explains why she's so confused in her doctrine beliefs.

Calvary Chapels don't believe the Gifts of the Holy Spirit operate today and they do...that's a big thing with me.

Do you want a full-gospel church? That moves in the Gifts? That moves in prophesy? That Worship Father God, Lord Jesus and Holy SPirit and are spirit-filled?

Lots of folks there (per my friend) are not spirit-filled. What do you want in a church?
---Donna5535 on 11/5/10

Well I'll say this, I searched their homepage and their "what we believe" link was all too ambiguous. They have a link for more information and it takes you to their bookstore!

The absence of available core doctrines they adhere to is disturbing. Unless I can see a clear statement of faith showing what they believe up front I avoid involvement. I'm not saying it's warranted in this case, because I don't really know, but the most important thing is to find a ministry that believes what you do and is open to examination.

Find yourself a Eastern Orthodox Church where God's word (all of it) is taught, and worship is given to God in the manner described in the Holy Scriptures, in spirit and in Truth.

In IC.XC.,
