There's always going to be different opinions,as there should be. I never said that it was only one opinion there. I simple said it was a good place to start reading on some of the history of our founding fathers & documents. You'll have to find more information other places, if you're sincerely looking for the truth you'll find it. Now to respond to the "What God?" question, I personally believe they're talking about God the creator of the world. The one & only true God. However, I don't feel the need to argue the point. This is America after all... believe whatever you want.

Interesting enough, Reba, when doing just that multiple articles appear refuting the notion that America was founded as a Christian nation.
While many of the "founding" fathers held Christian beliefs, there is nothing that shows that Christian principals were inherent in the founding of this nation.

Donna66 that is a very good point and certainly goes along with our oh so fragile human nature. Probably most Christians have prayed and thanked God when experiencing the pressure and pain of adversity. It isn't inconceivable that the leaders of our Country would do the same. A President without a prayer is the weakness of a Nation.

I'm talking about what's in primary sources.
In this case how exactly do the Declaration of Independence (a very liberal document for the time when Bible believers were royalists), Articles of Confederation, and Constitution quote specifically Christian principles?

I'm thankful for true preachers like Apostle Paul, Saint Augustine, Gildas, William Tyndale, Iohn Caluin, and Theodore Beza.
The Pilgrims and Puritans were thankful for the Geneva Bible, the New Testament translated out of Greeke by Theodore Beza.

Darlene-- it must be significant that at least three presidents, years apart, thought it important to dedicate a day for citizens to be thanking God. I may be wrong, but it seems like all three might be related in some way to times of crises: The Revolutionary War, the Civil War and WWII.

Donna66 thanks for the added info about Washington,I had seen something about that too. What I wonder is why did Lincoln's declaration take hold and was followed and Washingtons evidently ignored. I saw too it was Lincoln who said it was to be on the fourth Tuesday and Franklin D Roosevelt who set the third Thursday of November. Yes thats the way I learned it too. One thing I know a person can say something was one way but History will prove either he is right or wrong. New evidence can be presented and the History we knew can be changed but man cannot speak it into being.

I started a blog asking just WHAT Christian principles America is based on, asking for Biblical or creedal quotes in our founding documents.
The best anyone could come up with was having the 10 Commandments in the Supreme Court, which are not specifically Christian, but JEWISH.
In any case, only three of them have the force of civil law today.

Actually, according to US Law, it isn't.
In fact, the Treaty of Tripoli explicitly states that the US is NOT founded on the Christian religion.

Sounds like our President needs to study up on our American history. I didn't hear his Thanksgiving speech but I did hear the one where he said that America was no longer considered a Christian Nation. It sounds like he's isn't well informed on some things.

History Channel showed about the first Thanksgiving & actually it was Pilgrims Harvest Feast,which they invited the Indians to join. Pilgims landed,visited by an Abenaki Indian who spoke English,he brought Squanto,a Pawtuxet Indian,former slave in Europe,he intoduced them to the Wampanoag Indian Tribe,their chief Massasoit was at the feast. It wasn't one day but three as was the Indians custom when they came to visit others. Record tells they brought 5 deer and Pilgims killed fowl. 1621 to 1863 all States and Colonies celebrated whatever dates each chose. In 1863 Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a National Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

Obama's Thanksgiving Address said that Thanksgiving is a holiday to memorialize the Native Americans who helped the settlers learn to fish and grow corn. I don't believe he mentioned God at all.
The Native Americans did do this. But never, until recently, has gratitude to them been cited as the reason for the Thanksgiving holiday...not in the days of the Pilgrims, and not now. If our children are taught this in school let's be sure they understand that credit can be given to Native Americans, but GRATITUDE to GOD, on Thanksgiving Day.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. We have so much to be thankful for. With conditions in the USA, as they are now, we are still a blessed and strong nation. I thank God for family,friends, excellent health,clean water and food. It is an awesome privilege to attend the church of my choice. The list could go on and on. I made a gratitude list the other day, and it was about 21 items that I am grateful for. First and foremost is God's awesome love, grace and forgiveness. My health, family, and His provision of all my needs is also on there.
Let's remember to be grateful the other 364 days of the year as well. An attitude of gratitude should be year round.
