Looking For Signs From God

I need help finding a way to stop "looking for signs" from God. I try to read God's messages into bits of alphabet I think I see in leaf formations, I seek words on stray scraps of paper in the yard. I apologize in prayer. If you have been there and been cured, please advise me!

My God is one who loves to give signs:
Genesis 1:14..and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Genesis 9:13 I do set my bow in the cloud,

Exodus 4:28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him.

Exodus 31:13 Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations,

2 Kings 20:8 And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day?

Isaiah 7:11 Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God, ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.

I am not sure that this is something that needs to be stopped. You are notlooking for signs that Jesus is the messiah, or that Jehovah is God. It seems to me that you simply want to hear from God or be ressured on some troubling issue.

One of my favourite bible charaters is Gideon:

Judges 6:37 if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.

Judges 6:39 let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

Isaiah 7:11 Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God, ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.

Geraldine, I used to look for signs until I read this:
Mt16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign,
---trey on 8/31/12

even though i do agree that we should walk in faith and not look for signs, in that verse, jesus is addressing the sadducees and pharisees, who had secret signs to each other. so jesus said wicked are those people who look for signs. a double meaning,

look at all the hand signs that "stars" are making today. take a close look at logos. if you watch movies and tv, they have many signs embedded.

The scriptures teach us we are to walk by faith and not by sight. Stop "looking for signs" and start trusting that your Heavenly Father, who has watched over you this far will continue to watch over you. Lord bless you. I hope you get better!

Superstition is rift throughout the Christian community!

I think much of this is because we no longer understand the basis of walking by faith. instead we want signs, because we have no faith any longer.

But, we are to live by faith.....

thanks darlene. I sure don't want to move. this is the worst thing I have ever had to do. I don't even know where to start. we were in military for 23 years and moved A lot but I was much younger too. It use to be an adventure but now not so.

Shira4368 Praise the Lord someone bought your home,I'm so happy for you. Looking forward to how God opens doors for you in the near future. Isn't it just as exciting each time God answers our prayers as the first time He ever did it for us. God Bless

You are looking for the wrong kind of signs. If you instead look for the tokens of God's love for you, you will see them all around you. Both in God's Word and in the Book of Nature, God has given many signs of His infinite love for mankind.

It is also true that God will not reveal more truth to us until we live up to all that which has been revealed previously.

As for secret messages:

Deu 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever

Really, Geraldine, you need to look for God's will for you in the leaves of the Bible and forget the trees.
The Written Word will guide and lead you if you will only remove the other things out of the way.

I had a real estate sign in my front yard and God sent someone to buy my house. Really the jews wanted a sign and actually they are still looking for a sign.
---shira_4368 on 6/28/12

Elder, good one. I usually just try to keep up with the left lane, doing around 75-80 on the Interstate, not side streets. When they slow down, so do I, because it's a cop with a radar gun.

I learned from moving into this adorable little borough I live in, that the speed limit throughout it is 25 miles an hour. They occasionally put up those "Your speed is..." signs, which helped me.
---Trish on 6/28/12

I saw a sign from God. It said, Speed Limit 45.
I slowed down just before going through the speed trap.
Whew!!.........---Elder on 6/27/

i ignored the same sign. i was pulled over and ticketed.

this was a sign that i might kill myself or someone else if i cannot follow basic rules for my own purposes.

Wonderful prayer. I pray it every night.

Many in the 12 Step circles around the word know this as the 11th Step prayer.

Thanks for sharing it.

Hi, Geraldine (c: God bless you, it is good to see you (c: If you care, God knows you care. It is good to admit to God that something is wrong, and trust Him to make us better . . . not to guilt-trip ourselves. This includes "Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." (James 5:16) God includes us to help get each other "healed" more into God's love and . . . where our attention belongs (c:

By the way . . . a "number" of people are very concerned about seeking signs of big numbers . . . on their paychecks, sport scores, etc. So, any of us can be looking for signs, in one way or another!

womandiciple: I did not say anything wrong. God sent His Son, to die for us, and provide the means by which we can be reconciled to God. Jesus told the disciples that they would not be left alone when He left. So, at Pentecost, He sent the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God Himself, in the Spirit. He guides me as I study His Word, and ministers to me through every facet of my life.

I agree that this person also needs help not available here. I also believe that she needs to know the Truth about how God communicates to His children. I gave her the Truth first, because that is something she can grasp immediately.

" Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console,
to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Saint Francis
"Let me..."! As the Lord grants and bequests, there's
no time for hidden meaning.
---Nana on 6/26/12

Prayer is the key. Pray like this: Lord Jesus, thank you for answering my prayers. Lord Jesus, please help me not to be superstitious nor to seek for any meanings in everyday ordinary things, but instead to just accept the everyday ordinary things in their simplistic beauty for what they are, without seeking or attaching any analytical magnifying. Thank you Jesus. Lord, please give to me the eyes of a child to appreciate the wonders of your creation without dissecting the things apart into pieces which has no significance. Help me to see and accept that a leaf is just a leaf, and nothing more: that a scrap of paper is only a scrap of paper, and nothing more. In you Jesus I pray, Amen.

Fear and Faith cannot exist in the same heart at the same time. Either you have faith in God or you have fear in the absense of God.

I think based upon your blog question that your looking for signs is a way to doubt God. To doubt His plan for you. To doubt His provision for you. To doubt that He is God.

Whatever you determine your doubt to be, surrender it to Him. Tell Him about it. Seek His Word and the answer to your doubt. It is there if you look for it.

I agree this sounds more like a situation that needs help that isn't online. and also to Trish you posted
"God loves us so much, He sent Himself, through His Spirit, to reside within us."
WRONG! God sent his son .His son came down in the flesh & he taught about his fathers kingdom. He reflects his father.God himself didn't come down. Pease watch how you word things so new believers donot mistakenly get misguided.

\\How do you know there is a god who might give signs?
---Catholicus on 6/26/12\\

I'm not saying that God does not give signs, but to be always looking for them is neither spiritually nor mentally healthy.

If God has something special to say to you, you'll know it.

Aside from superstition (which is an active sin against faith), this is also sounds like scrupulosity, which is the spiritual manifestation of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).

This is NOT something that can be treated by computer chat. You need professional help in dealing with your OCD. Keep in mind that all this will do is give you better raw material to work with. Your spiritual and moral choices are still up to you.

That you recognize you have a serious challenge is a good sign. God bless you on your journey to healing.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

My Bible study groups just finished an awesome study on finding messages from God. It's called, "Discerning the Voice of God," by Priscilla Shirer. She is a gifted Bible teacher, who studied at Dallas Theological Seminary.

The key points are that God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit. He uses Scripture, other believers, and our minds, when they are focused on Him.

God doesn't speak through random bits of words or letters. God does not speak to His children randomly. God loves us so much, He sent Himself, through His Spirit, to reside within us. Therefore, you must stay in His Word. That is where His messages are.

Check out that Bible study.
