Take Up Cross Daily

In Luke we are told to take up our cross daily and follow Jesus. Does this mean be ready at all times to sacrifice myself? Or is there wider meaning?

Kathr 4453 thanks for your prayers Mama is doing pretty well. They didn't take her to the services but I realize God is in charge and maybe Mama wasn't as ready to go as she thought she was. Sadly I received news that her 86 year old sister died yesterday and now I must pray whether to tell Mama or not. She had been somewhat confused over the first death at first and I'm worried this would be too much too soon. The Room mate was loved like a sister and this is a sister. Please keep praying for mama and the family of Mama's sister needs prayer too. God blessed my Aunt and all her children by making a way for them to all be there before she died and she knew it. She was a very good Christian woman so I know I'll see her in heaven. God Bless

Darlene, that is wonderful. She will be in good hands, and will no doubt also get others to help with her too!

..the Lord is so wonderful.....

Kathr 4453 My Mama insisted on going to the service and thank God the Social Worker,I think,is going to take her. Mama is one strong 97 year old lady. Thanks for the prayers and the good advice. God Bless
---Darlene_1 on 4/28/15

Darlene, just a thought that maybe the family of the lady who has passed can help you with this, that maybe they can say it is not going to be but just for close family members or something.....then you won't have to be the bad guy here.....just a thought. Still
Rating for you.

Kathr 4453 I don't have to tell Mama about her room mate. She began asking questions about her so the Social Worker told her she is dead. She cried a little but stated she wanted to go to the services and we can't take her as neither of us can lift her in and out of the car,she can't stand, therefore I must tell her she can't go. Please keep praying for us and the family of the room mate. Thank you. God Bless

Kathr 4453 thank you so much for your prayers. I am concerned for Mama, she has dementia but not bad but now she doesn't even seen to realize her room mate is dead. It appears she is blocking out that but has become very confused about everything. She knew she was dying but now it's as if she never existed. I am praying about what I should do tell her and let her grieve or let it go. I am inclined to tell her I have always been honest about things with her. God Bless

Darlene, so sorry to hear she has passed. I know this will be upsetting to your Mother, and yes I will continue to keep her AND YOU in my prayers.
---kathr4453 on 4/26/15

Kathr 4453 thank you for the prayers and Mama will still need them her Room mate died. Evidently she was saved from what's written. That was good news. God Bless
---Darlene_1 on 4/26/15

Darlene1, seeing time is short, just share the Gospel with her. It appears she can hear you, and that is all that is necessary..Faith comes by hearing...You will never know How the Lord is working in her heart as you are talking to her.

Please keep us/ me updated.

Kathr 4453 thank you for your answer I do have a concern about whether she has been saved and I have no way to find out. I did pray she would be able to swallow again if God's will, and she did take a sip of water yesterday. I agree with you it's always right to pray,I just needed a confirmation. Thank you so much for your prayers it is a very hard time. God Bless

To pick up your cross and follow Him is to be worthy of Him. Matt 10:38-42. John put it this way, "He who abides in Him ought to walk even as He walked". 1st John 2:1-6. Jesus tells us to listen to His words and to do them and those who follow Him do so because they love Him and keep His commandments. Matt 7:24-27, John 14:23-25.

It sounds to me like I have to do as He says and follow Him and only Him even if it leads to persecution and death. Anyone who tries to follow Jesus will soon learn that to take His Words at face value is to be mocked, scorned and called a liar. When that happens to you, you will know you have picked up your cross to follow Him.

Darlene1, it is never wrong to pray for one to live long enough and hear the Gospel. I am so sorry you and your Mom are having to go through this. So many of us here online are older with elderly parents going through this painful time in life. I will be praying for you, your Mom and her roommate.

To crucify self and live for Jesus and as Jesus wants us to. Is what I get from these words.
---Samuelbb7 on 4/19/15

OK, firstly, no one can crucify themselves. Or even crucify self. This is wholly the work of the Holy Spirit in
you, as Romans 8:11-13 clearly state, it is the Spirit who mortifies AKA PUT TO DEATH, the deeds of the flesh. 1 Peter 4:1 says as well. To arm yourself likewise, we then go to James chapter 1. Count it all JOY when God puts you through these trials and tastings. What then is our responsibility? SUBMIT to God. Don't fight it, or complain like those in the convocation who in the end were rejected. That was also for our sake, so we can understand how God works in our life.

Please help me I need your wisdom in this matter. My Mama is 97 and in a Nursing Home her room mate in her 80s and they have learned to love each other like sisters, very close. Now the room mate is evidently dying, she can't swallow and eat or drink anymore. It seems she may be sedated because she sleeps all the time, although when I said hi and touched her shoulder and said she likes chocolate she smiled but didn't open her eyes. Mama is so upset and needs prayer,Mama knows she is dying.I feel inclined to pray God will heal her and make her able to eat and have prayed God's will be done but is it wrong to pray for a healing when Hospice is already been notified and her death is expected by her family. Thank You,God Bless

Correction to previous post. This line, "that he or she may empower of Him to be an active, effective, and efficient offering for His use. was meant to read "that he or she may [be] empower[ed] of Him to be an active, effective, and efficient offering for His use.

To crucify self and live for Jesus and as Jesus wants us to. Is what I get from these words.
---Samuelbb7 on 4/19/15

To take up the cross is to take for oneself, elevate, and share a given knowledge and understanding of the atoning sacrifice for Jesus, and what that has meant for man. To present oneself to the Father as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to Him, which is our spiritual worship and service. In other words, the believer is to yield him or herself to the Father's Spirit, that he or she may empower of Him to be an active, effective, and efficient offering for His use. A vessel of honor, set apart, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

"Then He said to them all, 'If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.'" (Luke 9:23)

Jesus said this to "all". So, yes this is not for only certain specially called martyrs.

And this is for "daily". Jesus on the cross is our example (Ephesians 5:2) of all He means, I would say including >

all-loving love

having hope for any and all people

loving and helping and even suffering for people who do not deserve to have us help and suffer for them

being obedient to our Father, so we can let go of any person or thing in our lives

being corrected in our character so we can do this really > Hebrews 12:6-11

Monk, yes, you are right in a way. I was thinking of gratuitous in the sense that God is not obligated to do anything for us, and it was gratuitous in the sense that Jesus committed no crime to deserve crucifixion.

Learner said, " We are to be willing to be nailed to a cross gratuitously, just as Jesus was."

I take exception to that sentence, as Jesus' death on the cross was not gratuitous.

We are called to take up our cross, and follow--through pain, suffering, joy, long life, and final death. That cross may seem heavy st times, but it is our lot to take it up if we want to follow Him.

Pray for me,
the unworthy monk Brendan

In context, Jesus says after taking up our cross daily that "whosoever wants to save his life will lose it, and whosoever loses his life for His sake, will save it".

It speaks to me that I must surrender my life to Him. My selfishness, my will, my rights, my desires, my dreams, my everything.

I must not try to hang onto anything from my previous life. I accept that I have died with Jesus and He now lives His life through me.

I must be willing to take up His desires and His will for my life. No matter what the consequences. The life He lives through me is greater than I could ever want for myself.

I think that on the first level, it means to bear patiently the inconveniences, slights, irritations, and disappointments each day brings.

How can we do the greater, such as martyrdom, if we have not yet learned to do the lesser?

Christ is risen!
