Knee During National Anthem

Can someone explain why taking a knee during our National Anthem is sticking it towards the cops?

Usually the Anthem is associated with the Military.

Am I missing something? I don't watch NFL. Are Police Officers routinely walking on the field during the Anthem?

The idea was not to stick it to the cops. But to protest Police brutality.

Which as Christians who love others we are supposed to oppose.

I don't watch the NFL either. But kneeling in protest. That does not bother me. To me to kneel is respectful. To boo and cuss people out is disrespectful.

Hatred towards others is against the laws of Jesus.

StrongAxe: Hurricanes hitting Puerto Rico..His waiting 2 weeks before acting,//

You all ALWAYS EXAGGERATE everything. 14 days was the 4th.

Maria hit Sept 20th night and into most of Sept 21th. Wasn't until the 22nd when Maria CLEARED the Island.

1. Trump SENT cargos of supplies DAYS BEFORE the 20th.

2. The Jones Act was LIFTED Sept 27th 5 days after the Hurricane left the Island. Which upset Florida Business men

3. He visited PR on the 3rd. All before your so called '14 days waiting period'.

Just be honest with the facts.

\\Pledging allegiance to the flag is NOT required or even mentioned in the constitution.\\

FWIW, the Pledge of Allegiance was written around 1892 or so, and first used in some civic ceremony in Ohio.

In 1954, the words "under God" were added.

We seldom said it when I was in public school.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 10/5/17

StrongAxe, it is not illegal for a private institution to require their employees to stand during the Anthem. Constitutional amendments only restrict the power of the government, not private institution or individuals. A public government run school may not be allowed to enforce such a rule, but a private school can. Freedom of speech doesn't prohibit private organizations or homeowners from governing behavior or speech inside their own homes or privately owned premises. The government can't force you to abide according to their code of conduct, but a private employer can. The employee is always free to not be employed by that employer.
---ObamasBoy on 10/5/17

Pledging allegiance to the flag is NOT required or even mentioned in the constitution. Regardless of what the flag represents, speaking words to it or making gestures to it are not required by law, and the Supreme Court ruled that they CANNOT be REQUIRED.

Originally, NFL players were required to be off the field when the anthem was played. It was only in recent years, when the U.S. military wanted to boost recruitment, that they enlisted the NFL to help them by having the players be present during the anthem.

Regardless of what they signed, such provisions as you mention are ILLEGAL. It is basic law that any illegal provisions in ANY contract are null and void. Morals clauses ARE legal, hence enforceable.
---StrongAxe on 10/4/17

"NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed this morning the practice began in 2009, adding, 'As you know, the NFL has a long tradition of patriotism. Players are encouraged but not required to stand for the anthem.'

Before 2009 they were not on the field during the anthem. Between 2009 and 2014 (approx) they were paid with tax payer money to be present and show a display of patriotism. In 2015 they dropped their 501c tax status....or whatever status if that is incorrect. They are NOT being paid for patriotism any longer.

The issue was addressed in Congress of "PAY FOR PATRIOTISM "....written by John McCain.

When Colin Kaepernick first made waves by kneeling during pre-game ceremonies back in August 2016, the NFL issued a statement proclaiming that Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the National Anthem. NBC News similarly observed that The NFL has no such rule, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement is silent on the subject.

Nicole is wrong. The OFFICIAL wording states they should be on the sidelines during the anthem, but NOTHING stating anything about MUST STAND..

This has been clear since 2016 when it first came up. Now all these FAKE RULES are popping up but NONE can be verified as a genuine policy. Just MORE FAKE NEWS ..anyone can come up with ..yes even REPUBLICANS.
---kathr4453 on 10/4/17

Regardless the NFL manual, the Supreme Court ruled such requirements unconstitutional long ago. Employers CANNOT force employees to perform any kind of acts of political allegiance. Anyone who got fired for not doing so could easily sue in federal court, and win. Given how much money constitutional right violation lawsuits often earn, no team in its right mind would want to risk that.

Hurricanes hitting Puerto Rico are not Trump's fault. His waiting 2 weeks before acting, and preventing others who wanted to help from doing so (not temporarily suspending the Jones act, not allowing food stamps to buy hot meals because people can't cook, which WAS done in Texas and Florida) ARE his fault.

Time Sports

***Here's what the game operations manual says regarding the national anthem, according to an NFL spokesperson:
The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and ALL PLAYERS must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.

During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should STAND at attention, FACE THE FLAG, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking....Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses...-- Sean Gregory contributed to this report.

NURSE. I'm impressed. You came straight out quoting scripture. Good to see.

BTW, that scripture wasn't relevant to Jerry's post challenging Kathr's claim, but that aside it was still good to see God's word quoted.

Amidst all this controversy, a common meme has appeared on social media, typically sent by those who are against the protests: they claim there is an NFL rule stating that players must stand for the anthem. ... There is no rule in the NFL rulebook about standing for the anthem.

Nicole, thank you for pointing out two wrongs don't make a right.

Rosa Parks BROKE the Jim Crow Laws.....PRAISE GOD.

I see the death toll that is not the end of it. Only 5% of power up. Still limited communication with so many...which makes me DOUBT all Mayors MET for FEMA meetings.....sorry I don't believe that for a minute....since they couldn't even get in tough with their own truck drivers....

Its Amazing how Puerto Rico is Trump's fault! Who knew when America elected Trump as president that he could control the weather? That man should not be allowed anywhere near the big red button (Not the one that launches nukes. The magical one that launches hurricanes at Puerto Rico). katty & nursey: I will never understand how supposedly intelligent people can so terribly misconstrue another's words.

kat said "I never thought of the Anthem as praying to God"

I never said it was. I compared the treatment by the NFL of Tim Tebow kneeling to pray to Krappernik kneeling to disrespect America. I'll expect an apology.

katty also said "there is no LAW anywhere that says you must STAND during the anthem". There is an NFL rule that states as much, but they decided not to enforce it out of obedience to Obama.

So again I ask, do you support Tebow or the Krapper?

Strongaxe/ David, yes, We know there are deaths, unreported to date, I'm sure for political reasons. It's horrifying. And news just goes on to the next horrible event.

It's also a fact that if Irma didn't move to the right coming up through Florida, and hit St Pete and Tampa as was first thought, we would have a horrible infrastructure issue there as well. Houston built on swampland causing more flooding than would have taken place...and we want to point fingers at PR....who had no way of evacuating 3.4M people with a #4 coming at them.

I saw Marco Rubio's press conference saying if we didn't get more help there it would be a humanitarian crisis..while at the same time T is saying his response is a GOOD NEWS STORY. YIKES.

The other Mayors in Puerto Rico have reported that they DON'T KNOW what the Mayor of San Juan is talking about because they are GETTING all the HELP requested.

They also reporting that the Mayor of San Juan has been AWOL (Not present without authorization)from FEMA meetings PRIOR and NOW of Hurricane Maria.

But somehow she is available to make guess appearances on all the major cable news.

Nelson M. Rosario wrote about his father, who lives in Puerto Rico:

"For context, my dad is helping with rebuilding right now, and has friends in the govt, elected and appointed, on the island.
After I told him what the President said he went quiet and said "Wow." A second later he says "I'm gonna share one detail with you. One.
There's a medical center down here, and everyone that was in the Intensive Care Unit, died. Everyone. That's just one detail."

I'm sorry people feel PR could not pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. Neither could New Orleans.....---kathr4453

I agree Kathryn.
But I think its because folks really dont understand the situation.
Its easy to compare them to folks in Florida and Houston, who have found the strength to pull themselves out of the Chaos.

But those folks have one distinct advantage Puerto Ricans do not. They cant send their families to live with other family members, while they rebuild their lives.

For example, In Puerto Rico they need truck drivers. But in order for that truck driver to help out, he must leave his family,... who also needs him for their survival.

Quite the dilemma.
---David on 10/3/17

Luke, I think we all know anyone can spin the truth anyway they want. The truth will all come out in the wash. We already have seen the deaths of those in FLA nursing homes on the mainland, who were rescued in a more timely manner than Puerto Rico. The death toll ( we don't know that yet) in some of these remote areas with elderly with health issues we still do t know. And if the death toll is less that TX and FL, praise God for His mercy on PR. I would consider that a miracle of Devine intervention beyond words.

And the Mayor of San. Juan does not make decisions for the whole island.

I'm sorry people feel PR could not pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. Neither could New Orleans.....

The same applies to Republicans. Even during the pre-election debates, Trump lied almost once per minute, contradicting his own statements during that same debate multiple times.

Just yesterday there was a story of a Denny's where employees asked black customers to pre-pay for their food, but not white ones. Racism is NOT dead.

Puerto Rico is broke because the Jones act forbids foreign ships from bringing them cargo, to boost American shipping interests - so they pay twice as much for everything as Florida does. So much for conservative free enterprise.

Looting happens when there are emergencies, even in conservative Texas.

Puerto Rico was hit hard by economic issues from the closing of the Military base there, to big government bailouts for big banks, housing crisis, Trumps Golf Club closing and so on. Just as Houston was hit hard in the 80's by issues there, and New Orleans crumbling infrastructure that led to flooding that ended in over 2000 deaths.

Then they have to,pay so much more for food and goods being shipped in....

Come on..use your head.

The Democrat Mayor of San Juan refuses to take responsibility.

My Cousin said LOOTING is rampant. Several trucks with emergency food and water have been hijacked and etc. But you don't hear that on the news.

Puerto Rico is a special severe situation. But they should have been better prepared years ago.

How about Trump's mess? Puerto Rico is drowning, and he blames Puerto Ricans for not rebuilding. He tells them to ignore the fake news on TV - when they have no TVs, power to run them, or homes to watch them in. He blames them for their debt, while Florida and Texas have much higher debt, and he himself is personally responsible for $33M of it. He whines it's "too far away across a huge ocean" to help, and can't send 5000 troops to keep the peace while boasting of military might that can wipe Korea off the map. He prevents foreign ships from helping because it might hurt American shipping interest monopolies.

The girl friend videos her boy friend dying. She starts the video AFTERWARDS. She gives the narrative of that story, which the Officer denies.

Think about it? If she is so cold hearted NOT to console him as he dies, how can we believe her word?

Plus, no one in their right mind will ALLOW a person to reach for the glove compartment for identification after admitting they have a gun.

The Officer INSTRUCTS everyone OUT of the car first. Then the Officer gets the gun himself.

No Police Officer ALLOWS a person to hand over a gun.

Unfortunately, I didn't record the name so I can't easily find it. Sadly, when Facebook shows you something, it isn't easy to find again. However, while looking for it, I came across Philando Castile, who was shot dead while he was reaching for his license and registration, as requested by the officer. As required by law, he informed the officer that he had a pistol because he was licensed to carry. The officer then immediately said "don't move", and while he was putting his hands up, the officer shot him 4-5 times. He was not belligerent. He was not resisting arrest. He died for the unforgivable crime of being pulled over while black.

I'm not sure what world StrongAxe is living in, but it certainly isn't the USA. Seems like he gets his "reality" from the mainstream media, which tends to be one sided, only showing the shootings that fit their narrative. White shootings don't make the headlines because whites don't riot when one of their own criminals attacks a cop and gets killed. Despite the media's hyper-focus on black shootings, whites are more likely to be killed by police when exhibiting the same behavior. The punishment for shooting a black person is far worse than the punishment for shooting a white person. A white shooting is unlikely to even be noticed, while every black shootings, no matter how justified, is an "outrage".
---ObamasBoy on 10/1/17

No, I never said it NEVER happens to whites. You merely assume I did because it fits your "everything is black and white" narrative. Yes, sometimes innocent white people are shot too. However, it happens more frequently to black victims than white ones. I prefer the UK's police, where it almost never happens to anyone at all.

You constantly accuse me of "ignoring" things I don't mention. I don't mention them because they're not relevant to the discussion at hand. I was talking about institutionalized racism. Citizens murdering each other is not related to that. Even if it were (e.g. if black people murdered others more frequently), that's not an excuse for police to shoot first and ask questions later.

StrongAxe, I think I remember that incident, but please CITE it again.

Was that one in Minnesota?
When the Girl friend is recording him dying instead of consoling him. Please cite it.

//They took Dylan Roof to Burger King and bought him a meal.---Rob

The BIGGEST LIE! Fake News.
Scopes has the true story.
They didn't take him to Burger King.

They brought food from Burger King to him at jail.

A big difference.

The Scopes also has a checklist of 'RIGHTS' for people being arrested.

They can no longer deny anyone food.

The jail doesn't have a kitchen. So they go around to fast food places and charge the food to the city.

Everyone gets a meal. No matter the crime or race.
---Nicole_Lacey on 9/30/17

Dylan Roof displayed the Confederate Flag while burning the U.S. Flag. Then he massacred nine black people. What did the police do? They took Dylan Roof to Burger King and bought him a meal.

AXE. As Russian KGB Communist defector, Yuri Bezmanov said, people like you are "brainwashed useful idiots" for the far Left. Seeing your brainwashed state gives insight as to how even Christians can be so easily controlled by the Left's Fake news media.

I've seen news video of unarmed, with hands up, white people being shot multiple times by police in USA, yet you conveniently ignore this and instead just parrot the Left's racist narrative that somehow it only happens to blacks. I note also how you conveniently ignore the predominance of black on black, and even black on white murder. That's very PC of you.

You willfully ignore the systemic racism from the DEM's/Left because it's from your team.

---Haz27 on 9/30/17

To me, Nicole, ones mean to object to the unjust killing of blacks by police officers. So, if they claim to be objecting to unjust police actions, then it is clear they are not anti-military or anti-police. But they are protesting about what wrong people are doing while pretending to be police officers.

Of course, each person can speak for oneself about what he or she means or understands.

By the way, in the United States we have about a million police officers. We have not had a million murders by police, this year. Also, how many officers have risked their own lives, just today, to protect someone's mother or father or children or brother or sister or grandparents or grandchildren?

I have difficulty understanding why the NFL railroaded Tim Tebow for "taking a knee" to pray to God on the field an yet staunchly defends Colin Krappernick for his anti American stunt. I stopped watching the NFL games last year when they supported the Krapper.

The NFL is currently composed of 70% black black players, each making multi-millions of dollars each year. Poor babies.

How about you? Do you support praying to God or disrespecting the Country that sustains you?

But I mentioned one video where a white cop repeated "drop your weapon!". The victim repeated "I don't have a weapon!". The officer shot him 7 times.-StrongAxe

Do you see the irony in your statement? Your trying to say the cop shot the victim because of he stereotypes black people, and then you stereotype White cops.

Yes, people who disobey police get shot for their own actions. But I mentioned one video where a white cop repeated "drop your weapon!". The victim repeated "I don't have a weapon!". The officer shot him 7 times. He had no weapon and REPEATEDLY said that. The repeated the lie "drop your weapon" to make witnesses think he was threatened. Fortunately, victim's girlfriend recorded it all.

Things like this occur all the time - officers shooting black victims who are NOT threatening them, who do NOT have weapons, and who are NOT resisting arrest.

I also don't claim all cops are racists or murderers. Most are decent. But cops murdering innocent victims are mostly black victims.
---StrongAxe on 9/29/17

StrongAxe, I DIDN'T say anything about politics. You brought it up because you know that slavery and racism all applies to the Democrat party TODAY and YESTERDAY.

Clearly I was talking about racism when I spoke about the 50's and 60's. The closest time zone with REAL racism against Black people was in the 50's and 60's. Today White people are the VICTIMS of racism.

You, Josef, and Rob don't give any examples because there isn't any examples.

Black people shot by White cops are 99.9% due to their OWN ACTIONS!

Everyone knows you don't reach into your clothes and you don't run. Follow the cops' instructions.

All women alone fear cops (rape), but you don't hear women CLAIMING all cops are RAPISTS!

AXE. Nicole is correct. You are stuck in 50's & 60's on racism (that came from DEM's and their KKK).

This flawed view you hold is due to deceitful propaganda from DEMs, their terrorist groups ANTIFA & BLM, and Left's Fake News. They deliberately foment hate & division through their lies.

And it's not just in USA. The Left do same in Australia. Recently the leader of the opposition party, the ALP (our equivalent to DEMs), recently made spurious allegations that Aborigines long ago had their water holes poisoned and were given blankets laced with deadly pathogens. When questioned he would not provide evidence for his claim.

The Left and their globalist backers are simply trying to create racial division.

---Rob on 9/29/17

While things have greatly improved since the 1960s, they are not perfect. Blacks seem to be discriminated against systemically by police, which is why we have Black Lives Matter - because innocent blacks are frequently killed by police, while whites in similar situations, even ones wielding weapons, are captured alive, regardless of laws that demand equality.

Trump wants travel bans vs. brown Arabs and a wall vs. brown Lations, but has no problem with white Europeans, like his family and wives.

Nicole_Lacey: *I* am stuck in the 50s and 60s? That's funny, since when discussing D vs. R politics, you always refer back to both parties' records before that, when Ds were racist and Rs weren't.
---StrongAxe on 9/29/17

Everything you said was spot on. StrongAxe and others are stuck in the 50's and 60's.

I have told him several times living in Alabama as a Black Hispanic woman is wonderful.

The only racism going is coming from Black people towards White people.

As you said the so called Protestors are a little too late.

Plus, I dare to say these SAME Protestors would NOT have protested in the 60's when the REAL danger was present.

If it is all about Slavery why did the Idiots (Yes I said IDIOTS) stand during 'God save the Queen' in England?

England brought slavery to America!

When you have a group of multi-millionaires who live a life the vast majority of us can only try to imagine complaining about being oppressed, it makes those normal people want to chuckle. It would actually be funny if it weren't so serious.

On another point, when you have an entire race that receives preferential treatment and enjoys more rights and protections than everyone else complaining about how badly this country treats them and blaming the race who has been discriminated against for decades and now have far fewer rights and protections than the ones complaining, it understandably tends to make those people a little angry and actually worsens race relations.

"Allegiance to the flag creates unity," Only if it were consciously believed, and thus physically and emotionally implemented by all, through words and actions that correspond with the declaration. It would be a work of faith, allowed, If the love of the Father is allowed to shine through us. "I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America, .... one nation, under God, with liberty, and justice, for all. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,.. endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,..among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." The racist, by their actions, obviously believes this applies only to them.
---Josef on 9/29/17

StrongAxe, as a 35 year old black man, I have to firmly disagree with your analysis. Blacks in 2017 are not discriminated against, at least not on a systemic level. The pendulum has swung far in the opposite direction to where now whites are discriminated against in virtually every facet of society and have less rights than minorities. In 2017 America we have colleges, clubs, scholarships, organizations, job opportunities, etc that flat out boast "blacks only, no whites allowed". We even have laws that make crimes against blacks punished more severely than crimes against whites. We have laws that make true equal treatment a crime. It is actually illegal NOT to give preferred treatment to minorities. Been this way for decades.
---ObamasBoy on 9/29/17

I agree with Obamasboy.

It's disrespect & protest meant to perpetuate the deceitful propaganda of the Fascist Left.

The DEM's KKK is a spent force since the 1970's. The real threat to USA now is the DEM's and their Fascist/Racist domestic terrorists like BLM, ANTIFA and their backers like the NAZI collaborator and globalist George Soros.

The bigoted Left's delusional hate for Trump is behind this anthem insult.

We're seeing similar in Australia from the Left with their trademark lies, hate and bullying towards anyone who does not support same gender marriage, with the loss of rights, freedoms, and the deviancy indoctrination of school children, etc, that comes with it.

---Haz27 on 9/29/17

Well said Strongaxe, and exactly what I was attempting to convey. Trying to sweep the issue "under the rug" so to speak, or pretending it doesn't exist, won't help. Acknowledging it, and looking within as to whether one is in some way contributing to the problem or the solution, will. The social construct can be changed for the better one person at a time, if awareness of self and ones attitude is honestly discerned, especially by those in authority. However as one looking at this from the outside in, and basing my understanding on sense knowledge evidence, the ones at the top of the ladder of authority have proven themselves to be comfortable, prefer, and even advocate the status quo, and will answer to no one but "God".

Fact is, everyone in America is stereotyped by their ancestry, but with one distinction, blacks and whites are the only race of people who are identified by skin color.

When we see someone we do not know, who is black, or someone who is white, we put them into the stereotype, a societal stereotype that has been programmed into us.

We do not call Orientals "yellow people", nor do we call Hispanics, "brown people". Why have whites and blacks been color coded? It's politically motivation, motivation used to create division, division which creates hate, hate which creates loyalists,...blind loyalists.

Allegiance to the flag creates unity, and though they don't know it, that's what they are opposed to it.
---David on 9/29/17

Many hold a toxic notion that some humans are more worthy than others. This expresses itself in racism (that leads to slavery and genocide), classism (that leads to economic disparity), etc.

We have come a long way since the 1960s, but these attitudes persist. The KKK is very much alive. Police shoot innocent unarmed blacks, yet armed white killers are captured alive. A recent video showed an officer repeating "put down your weapon" while an innocent suspect repeated "My hands are up - I am not holding a weapon", then the officer fired 7 shots into him, executing him.

As long as society disrespects people, how can you complain when those people, in turn, find it hard to respect that society?
---StrongAxe on 9/28/17

I wish everyone from Trump downward would just shut up about it, since it was originally a case of, "Least said, soonest mended."

There hasn't been legalized slavery in America for 150 years. They came a little late to the protest.
---ObamasBoy on 9/28/17

It's not America that's racist, it is the racist in authority in America that stains America, and there are none so blind, as those who refuse to see that. Slavery was racist and the oppression that has followed is founded on and sustained by racism. With that racism being based on a hated and fear that not even the racist understands, or can identify. Defined by Webster as a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others. Note that the desire to oppress is not even factored into the definition, imagine that.
