Is This An Unknown Tongue

You go Leon..:)

Is This An Unknown Tongue

first we have to realize that the italicized word unknown was added by the english translators. Then by context wouldn't Paul have said "the Holy Spirit" rather than My spirit? Notice that the word spirit is capitalized when regarding the Holy Spirit and not so when referring to our spirit. So a tongue could be any language here and don't we ALL pray with our spirit? Ya gotta believe at that time the true gift as in Acts was to spread the word to all nations.

Is This An Unknown Tongue

If praying in the spirit is speaking in tongues then that denies those of us that can't speak in tongues the privledge. That's a devisive way to look at the Word ya think? Didn't Paul say that there are many voices in the world and yet none are with out signification.

What Are Private Tongues

Have those of you that speak tongues ever considered that from YOUR perspective...those of us that don't, can't pray in the Spirit? That means every time the bible mentions praying in, or in the Spirit that in your eyes it's impossible for us to do so. I'd like to think that God made the bible for all of us therefore we have to look at "in the Spirit" in the same manner.

What Are Private Tongues

I believe when it says "edifies himself" Paul is condeming. Everything we do should edify "others"
That God spoke to men in a way they could understand leaving no doubt.
That Satan was and is an angel so there's no secret language hide things from him.
That the true gift was to spread the word in any language.
And that God wants us all to be like minded in unity to do his work. To hang on to something like tongues and cause a division is not what God wanted.

Pentecostal Church Got Saved

Mike, maybe that is what happens to the human body when people get in that spiritual state of mind or (when the spirit is upon them. maybe? That could be a fair conclusion. I still say that tongues was a worldly language in Acts and Corinthians. A miracle indeed. The instructions in 1 Cor is a little vague to change it from the way it was in Acts. Obviously it can be believed either way in Corinthians or there wouldn't be room for debate. It's a choice we all have to make.

Pentecostal Church Got Saved

In all this how do we abide by this verse 1 Corinthians 1:10. How do we get to this point?

What Is A Pentecostal

I was reffering to the unintelligable language some people use. I do believe that the gift of tongues was to minister to others in their own dialect unknown by the speaker(as in Acts) That would be awesome. How could you imitate that? I was saying that if Jude 20 says to pray in the Spirit and that means to speak incoherently then how could we that don't have the gift apply it to our lives. Just askin

What Is A Pentecostal

Robyn, in Jude verse 20 it says "pray in the Holy Ghost". I hear that means praying in tongues to those who believe in it. But, what about those of us that don't believe in speaking tongues. Does that verse not apply to us simply because we don't have the ability to speak in tongues? And wouldn't that include all the other verses that mention "in the spirit" ? I'd like to think that the whole bible applies to me as well even though I don't have the gift. thoughts?

Speaking In Tongues Fake

If one insists upon using Jude verse 20 then every believer should speak in tongues and Paul said that wouldn't be the case. If that verse means one speaks in tongues when praying in the Spirit then it doesn't apply to everyone. Right? Some think praying in the Spirit means "in tongues" and to others it means "in accordance to His will" etc.. No doubt this is a gray area and can be taken either way. To each his own.

Speaking In Tongues Fake

We can not deny that tongues were a sign not for the believer BUT for the unbeliever and why. That we are reborn with a H.S. and that not all will speak in tongues for it is a tool to spread the word and bring people together not to cause problems like these. The rules say we should also have an interpreter on hand so that all may be edified. The gifts were given for the edification of the church not self.

Speaking In Tongues Fake

We are told that every believer in Christ has the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:13-14), but not every believer speaks in tongues (1 Corinthians 12:29-31). Romans 8:26 states that the groanings of the Spirit cannot be uttered

Speaking In Tongues Fake

If they don't understand what their saying and it's the Holy Spirit giving the utterence. Then isn't that like saying their mind is bypassed and God is talking to himself. The H.S. moves they're mouths and sounds come out but they're minds are unfruitful. It sounds like the H.S. being God uses peoples voices to speak unknown words to himself?? I'm confused. How does that edify oneself or the church if this is what most claim to be tongues.

Scripture For Salvation In Tongues

I always looked at the scripture in Mark where it talks about speaking in a new tongue as SPREADING the Word, the NEW covenant, the new tongue for the apostles was when they heard the gentiles praise God upon receiving the Holy Spirit in THIER own tongue and the following verses meant that nothing would stand in your way.

Test the fruits? This isn't an answer. BEcause..even the very ellect will be deceived. Even those that think they are as right as rain with the lord or show to have all the fruits, can't be persuaded as to whether they have a genuine gift of tongues or not. It's hard to take someone's experience away from them. You think because you show to have the fruits and you belive the gift is genuine with your perception of scripture that no one can tell you otherwise. What good would it do for me to convert you?

Speaking In Tongues Fake

I can easily see how tongues could have gotten out of hand after pentecost. The only means of communication was by foot and word of mouth. Can you imagine how it went? One says "They started babbling and the apostles said it was the Holy Spirit!" Only because some of the hearers didn't understand the "langauage" that was spoken. Hence the letter of correct to the Corinthians for not being understood when they preached or prayed. Paul mentioned SPEAKING more than PRAYING.

Baptism In The Holy Spirit

Herb, it's okay. I think your a very well grounded person who believes in your position of faith just as much as anyone else here. I can respect that. We are to be good examples, witnessess, and representatives of God's people. Lashing out and lashing back is not of God people. How can we expect people to say amen to what we are saying if we are not the example. ??

Tongues, Knowledge And Shouting

I guess I still don't understand the difference between being filled and receiving. If I fill a glass with water it has also "received" the water and vise versa. This sounds like a matter of interpretation of scripture. You can read it either way but which is more fluent. I read it as the HS being "the gift". Receiving the HS is accomanied with the traits of being filled or receiving the Fruits in Gal. 5:22

Prophesying In Tongues

1 COR 14:10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. Now why in the world would he bother to say that? This one verse keeps telling me that he had the gift of worldly langauges because of his evangelism. It was a tool for his appointed job. To look at it this way brings a whole new perspective to the 14th chapter. I can see where people are divided on the issue.

How To Be Holy Ghost Filled

Mat 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.
