Lupe,
One more thing before I go. You said:"I believe God's forgiveness, life itself, and salvation are all free gifts from God. In order to get forgiveness you have to repent."

Read your statement over again, very slowly, and think about what the words mean.

Lupe,

I don't have time right now, as I am leaving for a long week end. Perhaps when I return. I'll leave you with a quote to contemplate. Sorry, I don't remember who said it, but I suspect it was Luther.

"If one is saved, it is entirely the work of God; if one is lost, it is entirely the fault of man, who, while not free to accept the gospel, is by nature able to reject it."

BTW, I am a Christian by Divine intervention and a Lutheran by choice.

Lupe,

You only assume that I am a Roman Catholic. I am not, if that makes you feel any better.

Lupe,

Do you believe that forgiveness, life, and salvation is a free gift?

How can one be sure that his love for God is genuine or his commitment is "sincere" when it springs not from a desire for God, but a desire to escape God's wrath or hell?

Man of himself, or from his natural powers, cannot contribute anything or help to his conversion, and that conversion is not only in part, but altogether an operation, gift and work of the Holy Spirit alone, who accomplishes and effects it, by his virtue and power, through the Word.

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

2 Tim 2:25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth,

Acts 15:7 Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.

Who said that repentance bothers me? Although my old Adam doesn't always like doing it. Certainly God convicts my heart of sin and I either repent or remain in my stubborn rebellion against God. But my repentance has nothing to do with my being born again. Repentance is ongoing. Being born again is an event. John 3:5 "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."

Romans 9:15,16 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

Faith is a gift, it is not something we have come to or decided upon. It is a gift. Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Lupe,

First, why do you assume that I am not a Christian? Second, you didn't answer my questions. Third, I agree with all of the scriptures you put forth, however they do not show that our repentance or our commitment has anything to do with our born again status. John 1:13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
