Death Penalty Biblical

kathr4453:

All I've seen discussed on this thread is about let he who is free of sin cast the first stone, i.e. the Woman Taken in Adultery.

What are the qualifications? He who is without sin? Just doesn't fly here ....otherwise even putting in prison would go against that mindset.

First, Jesus was teaching his followers. His commandments apply to them, nobody else, including governments (UNLESS those government claim to be Christian).

Second, he was speaking about the death penalty - NOT any other kind of penalty. He told debtors to reconcile with creditors before they were thrown in prison, NOT that debtor's prison was wrong.

kathr4453:

SO obsessed with sodomy, you hijack a THIRD blog?

Lv 18:22, 20:13 are about Abomination, not salvation. Many Christians accept other Levitical Abominations without raising an eyebrow.

1 Co 6:9 says "malakoi" and "arsenokoitai". The first means "soft". Mt 11:8, Lk 7:25 "a man clothed in soft raiment", i.e. fashionable aristocrats. It is never used sexually, so why assume that here?

An church writer condemned the second as sometimes done by couples (if sexual sin, a heterosexual one).

It's also curious why Paul would mentionin one sin twice (IF they are the same). Jesus had so little concern about sodomy, he never mentioned it.

Death Penalty Biblical

You keep making false assumptions about my world view and jumping to incorrect conclusions. Also, "Is DP Biblical?", does not depend on whether one believes the bible or not. Asking whether something is implied by any canon does not require one to believe that canon (e.g. asking "Was Anakin Luke's father?" does not require one to believe Star Wars is real).

kathr4453:

By whose standards? Under Jewish law at the time, murder, adultery, blasphemy, and sabbath breaking all earned the death penalty. None was worse than the others.

We don't forgive and let go murderers child molesters rapists because we are all sinners.

John 8 doesn't talk about forgiveness. Only execution.

How To Get Saved

Cluny:

Since we are commanded to be baptized, and it is something that we DO, it is thus a work. Paul himself said that we are saved by faith, and NOT by works, lest anyone should boast.

Jesus said that he who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he that does not believed will be lost. This leaves the grey area: what about he who believes, yet is not baptized? The thief on the cross answers this question - someone who believes, is not baptized, yet is saved. So the key defining thing about salvation appears to be faith, and not baptism itself.

On "Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy", you wrote: STRONGAXE are you saying the subject of S & G was about Abraham? And whether Abraham could stop God? If so,,,,then you were not paying attention either.

No. I didn't say anything like that. For the past several posts, I was saying that talking about S & G on a blog devoted to "Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy" is off-topic, and your accusing someone else to changing the subject on a blog where 98% of the posts were ALREADY OFF-TOPIC is meaningless deflection.

But you're so obsessed with S & G that instead of reading what I said, you keep replying to what you're incorrectly imagining that I'm talking about.

You wrote: Why is it when Nicole pops in the subject changes....

There are almost 75 messages on this blog about "Seven Spiritual Works Of Mercy", and I can only find maybe 3 about that actual subject, yet you accuse Nicole of changing the subject?!

Church Bells Ringing

kathr4453:

I don't just spontaneously change the subject on threads. If I ever discuss something off-topic, it's as a direct and related response to something someone else said (e.g. discussing what "abomination" means, since YOU mentioned "abomination" first.) But I agree. This particular discussion is done here.

Church Bells Ringing

kathr4453:

How DID this start? *YOU* mentioned it here totally out of the blue on 10/8/19. Nobody on this blog said anything at all with reference to that subject, so why did you bring it up all of a sudden? If you post a message for all to read, all get to reply to it.

But I didn't criticize you on that. I just addressed the point *YOU* made - then *YOU* accused *ME* of deflecting (10/9/19). Calling something "an abomination" is meaningless unless you understand just what "abomination" means, so studying that is NOT deflection. *I* am discussing the issue. *YOU* are the one who is challenging the appropriateness of me discussing an issue *YOU* yourself started.

Seven Spiritual Works Of Mercy

Nicole_Lacey:

In Gen. 18, God heard reports about the wickedness in Sodom, and decided to see if reports were true. Sodom had ALREADY done wicked things, and God had ALREADY decided IN ADVANCE to destroy it, if those reports were verified.

In Gen. 19, angels went to Sodom, and we know what happened. But God's decision to destroy Sodom was already made BEFORE the angels even went there: 19:13: "For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord HATH SENT us to destroy it."

I never said God can't change his mind. Jonah proves he can. Why do you put words in my mouth?

Seven Spiritual Works Of Mercy

Nicole_Lacey:

You're totally missing my point. My point was that God had ALREADY DECIDED to destroy Sodom, long before he sent the angels there. Thus, the attempt to rape the angels had NOTHING to do with why he wanted to destroy the city.

You wrote: Why are you still policing? Move on Strongaxe.

Why are you obsessing about sodomy in two blogs that have nothing to do with that subject? Create a new blog for it, and move on.

Oh, and YOU telling me what I should and shouldn't post *IS* itself policing what I'm saying, so pot, kettle, black. By the way, saying a particular side-subject is off-topic for this blog IS on-topic for any any blog.

Seven Spiritual Works Of Mercy

Nicole_Lacey:

What make you think that? Abraham was successful.

Not really. He got God to lower the number, but that didn't stop God from destroying Sodom anyway.

Are you suggesting God planned to go back on His Word?

No. God HAD ALREADY DECIDED to destroy Sodom. THEN, he told Abraham about that. THEN, Abraham tried to talk him out of it, but failed. THEN God sent the angels.

You write: No Strongaxe, why are you policing this thread? You bust in other threads and disrupt the subject matter often...once asking you not to, you just ignored and continued.

I am not "policing this thread", nor "disrupcing subject matter". When someone else makes a comment (out of context or not) that makes claims that aren't substantiated, I (and anyone else reading them) have every right to challenge those claims. YOU are the one who suddenly decided to bring up sodomy in two separate threads that have nothing to do with that subject. You have yet to explain why you have done so. If you're so obsessed about the subject, why not create a separate thread for it?

You wrote: Yep I sure did Strongaxe and was addressing Cluny...not you. So why are you minding other peolple's business defending sodomy? That's the real question.

A better question is, why are you wasting this blog to attack it, since it has absolutely nothing to do with what was being discussed here? Why are you so obsessed with this one topic that you're currently hijacking two separate blogs to talk about it?

You wrote: Proove it??

A simple reading of the actual story would have done that, if you had actually bothered to look, but since you didn't, let me break it down for you:

Genesis 13:13: Men of Sodom were wicked and sinners

Genesis 18:20: Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah was great, and their sin was very grievious, God decided to destroy them. Abraham tries to bargain him down, but fails. Note that this point, God had ALREADY DECIDED to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.

Genesis 19:1 The angels come to Sodom

19:4 The men surround them and demand to know them

19:24 God rained fire and brimstone on the city.

Genesis 18:20 occurred BEFORE 19:4.

I would expect that members of the same congregation would at least consider themselves friends, especially since a family relationship (implied by titles like brother, sister, etc.) are even CLOSER than friendship.

You wrote: you're the one deflecting bringing up scripture that is not even in the discussion.

ME Deflecting? This blog is about Greta Thunburg, yet on 10/8/19 you brought up sodomy totally out of the blue. You changed the subject, so now deal with it. Since you called it an abomination, it's fair to examine, just WHAT that word ACTUALLY means.

If ALL sin is an abomination, why does God single out certain ones as especially heinous? And why do Christians have such apoplectic fits over some abominations over others? I have yet to hear a church picketing Red Lobster or divorce court. Can you explain why that is?

KJV "Earthquakes in divers places" suggests underwater tectonics to a non-English-speaker using only a dictionary.

Worldwide Church of God teach British Israelism (i.e. British are Lost Tribes of Israel) - Hebrew "brit" is "covenant" and "ish" is "man", hence "man of the covenant". But Hebrew GRAMMAR says "brit ish" MUST be translated "covenant of man" - something a dictionary will NOT tell you.

Attempting translation with only a dictionary tells you what words mean, not what sentences mean. "Man bites dog" vs. "dog bites man" - same words, different meaning (word order has different meaning in different languages).

You wrote: Strongaxe, I find it interesting that many try to down play the issue by doing what Trump and Kelly Ann Conway do ....called DEFLECTING. Now you too? Surprising! Careful Strongaxe....

I note that you're not actually addressing the issues I brought up, but merely dismissing them out of hand. THAT is deflection.

I'm not downplaying anything. I'm showing what scripture ACTUALLY SAYS, without the vineer of dogma that people have been taught to believe without question.

When you want to know what God things about things, look about what he talks about the most. Those are the things he cares about most. Don't obsess about things he mentions rarely.
