Paul's Thorn In The Flesh
The repeated hardships Paul encountered for the gospel' sake were the buffetings. BUFFET: "To repeatedly strike with an open-hand." The closest word most us are familiar with, that's similar to "buffet", is the word SLAP. A slap causes one to feel a certain way. A thorn prick causes one to feel a certain way too.
Paul used the word "buffet" to convey a visual image of how it felt to him to repeatedly get slapped over and over again by shipwrecks, stonings, demonic persecutions from religious leaders, snake-bites, being left for dead, spending days and nights in the deep, etc.
One minor point: Paul was never a gentile. He was an unbelieving Jewish leader that met Jesus, became a messianic Jew. Wasn't a Gentile.
